Hood design-Week 2
Report on Designing of the Hood
PARTS OF HOOD

The components of the Hood are, the inner pannel, the outer pannel, the hinge assembly which consists of the hinge and the hinge engine compartment, and the striker and latch.
INNER PANNEL

This design started with the class A surface which was the surface of the hood. We start by creating the inner pannel. this pannel consists of a main emboss and a few local embosses inside this emboss to provide strength and aesthetics to the cars inner pannel. These embosses also have cut outs which are made for pedestrian safety as on an impact the hood can collapse into itself and break ensuring safety of the things/people on its path.
MASTIC POINTS

These cutouts consist of mastic points which are basically small semicircular metal portions extending out into the cutouts. this is where we fix the mastic sealant which link an elastic compound which behaves like rubber when we're assembling the hood outerpannel and inner pannel, these mastic points are provided to reduce the overall vibrations produced by the cars engine on the hood.
HEMMING

Hemming is basically the process of rolling the hood outer pannel over the hood inner pannel which holds the inner pannel tightly in place. Hemming is done to attach the outer pannel with the inner pannel for the same reason as to reduce the vibrations and also hemming is aesthetically better than using welding techniques to join these parts together. We also give reliefs at sharp edges or small curves to the hemming can be done without overlaps.
STRIKER MECHANISM

Next step is to position the Hinge and the Striker such that we have the perfect motion required for the functionality of the hood. This is done by placing the hinges in position on the embosses created for the hinges. We then draw a hinge axis connecting the two hinges. Then we draw a big circle with the hinge axis as the centre and make sure the radius is at the centre of the latch. we then draw a tangent on this circle which gives us the circular path on which the striker moves.
