Hood design-Week 2

What is HOOD?

A car hood is the hinged cover that rests over the engine of a front-engine vehicle. Its purpose is to provide access to the engine for repair and maintenance. A latch is typically used to hold down the hood. In some vehicles hood pins may be used to hold down the car hood. Hoods sometimes also contain a hood scoop, wiper jets, power bulge, and hood ornament. Car hoods are typically constructed from steel and sometimes from aluminum. Aftermarket car hoods may be constructed from various other materials, including carbon fiber, fiberglass, or dry carbon.

A car hood is meant to protect the performance parts of your vehicle, including the engine, while also providing easy access for repairs and maintenance. It is possible for the hood to incur damage as well. One of the most common types of damage is to the hinge, which is the device that connects the hood to the body of the vehicle. Over time, the hinge can become loose or may fall off completely. The hood is also prone to receiving scratches and dents.

Master Section of HOOD

Latch Trajectory

For the proper opening and closing of the hood, the striker should be perpendicular to the trajectory of the hood. For this, hinge is assembled at its position. Once it is placed, hinge axis is drawn. Using the hinge axis as the center we draw a big circle to the position the latch in such a way that it is perpendicular to the hood trajectory.

Mastic Data

As we know that the main purpose of the outer panel is for the aesthetic looks. Thus we cannot use bolts or welding. This has to be done with the help of the hemming and mastic sealants. Mastic sealants are elastic compound that behaves like the rubber. It is placed between the outer and inner panel. Initially is it in paste form, but after the hot furnace bath it gets hardened thus joining the outer and inner panel. Mastic sealant has the tendency to increase the strength of the panel and has influence of 80mm diameter.

Embossing

Embossing is a stamping process for producing raised or sunken designs or relief in sheet metal. This process can be made by means of matched male and female roller dies, or by passing sheet or a strip of metal between rolls of the desired pattern. It is often combined with foil stamping to create a shiny, 3D effect.

It is also made that, when the car is crashed the force will passed to cabin. If emboss are made, the forces are made passed or divided through embosses to hinge, so the passenger inside the car will be safe.

Hemming

Hemming is the process in which the edge is rolled flush to itself, while a seam joins the edges of two materials. Normally hemming operations are used to connect parts together, to improve the appearance of a part and to reinforce part edges. In hood design, hemming is used in assembly as a secondary operation after deep drawing, trimming and flanging operations to join two sheet metal parts (outer and inner) together.
