Benchmarking
What is Benchmarking?
Benchmarking is a procedure of measuring the performance of any company’s products, services against those of another company’s considered to be the best in the industry. The main thought of benchmarking is to identify opportunities for improvement. By studying companies with superior performance, tackle down what makes superior performance possible, and then comparing those services to how your business operates, you can implement changes that will result in significant improvements.
Steps in Benchmarking
Benchmarking is a simple, five-step process:
- Pick a product, service, or internal department to benchmark.
- Determine which best companies you should benchmark against which organizations you will compare your business.
- Collect information on their internal performance, or metrics.
- Compare the information from both companies to identify gaps in your company’s performance.
- Adopt the processes and policies in place within the best performers.
Example:
Medical settings collect benchmarking data about their patients, including waiting times, the quality of care, recovery times, and patient satisfaction. These data can be collected internally to establish the rate of progress in each area, and the results can also be compared to those of similar medical organizations to assess their position in the wider landscape.
