Hood design-Week 2

CAR HOOD DESIGN

Designing the hood of the car and understanding the reason behind the design of the hood and designing it correctly.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE METHODS

  • Design outer panel
  • Develop the inner panel
  • Develop all the Necessary Reinforcements
  • Develop all types hood support
  • Fix the required emboss
  • Provide mastic Data

HOOD INTRODUCTION:

The bonnet is the main component of a car at the front. The hood or bonnet of the car which protects the engine is considered as the frontal BIW enclosure.

Component the bonnet is designed to reduce wind resistance as air flows around the car.it is a luxurious look. The shape of the bonnet has been made aerodynamic to reduce the effect of wind. Bonnet size depends on car model.

For example, if the car is an SUV, the bonnet is made higher and the bonnet of the jeep is different and the bonnet of the sedan car is longer.

In recent years, the work has been done on the bumper and hood design of the vehicle front end to reduce the injuries to the pedestrians in the event of the front portion of the vehicle gets damaged including bonnet when met with an accident.so there is need to change the existing design of bonnet or by changing the existing design of bonnet or by changing the material. The bonnet is the hinged cover over.

The engine of motor vehicles that allows access to the engine

compartment for maintenance and repair.

TYPES OF HOOD SUPPORT

  1. GAS STAY
  2. SUPPORT ROD

GAS STAY

The gas stay is designed to be used on upward lifting doors, and uses hydraulics. Once you open the door slightly the spring will push the door into the fully open position, and This work will be completed on its own. Euro Fit stocks different size springs depending on door size requirements. It is mostly used where the weight of the bonnet of the car is heavy. The use of gas state will be seen less in Indian cars now.

SUPPORT ROD

It is widely used in many cars, especially in Indian cars. Because it is very easy and cheap. In this type we have to lift the hood by ourselves and place the support rod in the place provided in the hood or engine component. It is mostly used where the weight of the car bonnet is small. And we can make it according to the design of the hood and it is designed according to heavy weight.

INNER PANEL

The inner panel supports the outer panel. It has different bulges and holes at different places. The holes in the interior panels are designed according to the engine of the car and the hood interior panels vary from car to car. Those embosses provide stiffness as well as dissipate energy towards the hinges. To determine the most effective position of the hole, the method of modal stiffness is employed. The inner panel is offset from the parent work surface. Inner panel thickness ranges from 0.75 mm to 0.90.

OUTER PANEL

The outer panel is nothing but the outer skin of the inner panel. Otherwise called as the cover of the inner panel. This is the part that gives the hood or bonnet its look. There is no molding of any kind on it. Because they spoil the exterior look of the car. The outer panel is usually a model derived from the prototype design.

EMBOSS

The geometry is created based on the master section that was designed above. After performing the initial stages of design, we will provide local embosses to strengthen the component. The component will be strengthened based on the master section. When a force impacts the hood from the front, it travels in an upward direction. The component is designed to divert the force away from the passengers into the hinges, as shown in the image below. The embossings in the inner panel are made according to the diversion of the load path. The emboss depth is kept at a maximum of 5mm to be on the safer side so that the part is manufacturable.

HEMMING

Hemming is the process of joining both the outer and inner panels together. The hemming process rolls and wraps the hood outer panel around the inner panel and holds it tightly together. And both the inner penal and the outer panel are connected to it, so there is no welding in making the hood.

POSITION OF HINGE AND STRIKER:

The main function of the positioning hinge and striker is the opening and closing of the hood. This is done with the help of the latch and striker. To effectively install the latch and striker, we install the hinge and pull the hinge axis. Now, using the hinge axis as the center we draw a large circle at the place where we need to place the latch. Then, we draw a tangent line to the circle at that point and latch onto that area.

Building re-enforcements and crash bead:

After developing the entire interior panel for the hood, we needed to develop some additional necessary reinforcements. There will be a need to re-enforce the latch striker and possession that needs to be developed. All re-enforcements are made of sheet metal of thickness 1.2 mm.

CONCLUSION:

All parts of the hood are designed based on the required conditions and given values and assembled together to complete the hood design and the whole process is done correctly.
