Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus calculation \and optimization:
AIM
The elastic section modulus is defined as S = I / y, where I is the second moment of area (or area moment of inertia, not to be confused with moment of inertia) and y is the distance from the neutral axis to any given fibre.
Section modulus:
is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and secoud moment of area and polar second moment of area for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question. Equations for the section moduli of common shapes are given below. There are two types of section moduli, the elastic section modulus and the plastic section modulus. The section moduli of different profiles can also be found as numerical values for common profiles in tables listing properties of such.
ECTION MODULUS OF AN HOOD
- Section modulus is a direct measure of strength of any sectional area of an object about an reference axis(neutral axis).
- Strength is nothing but, capable of supporting greater loads, so higher the strength it has a high capable of supporting greater loads.
- This strength can be measured directly from Section modulus formula, and defined by below formula.
- Section modulus represented with a symbol of 'S'.
S=I/Y
STAP BY STAP:

Here the moment of inertia was calculated by using the NX-software obtained values are
IMAX:- 4.885928053X106mm4
Imin:- 1.395467956x104mm4
Y= 244.29640265/2 =122.148201325
S=I/Y
S=1.395467956x10^4mm^4/122.148201325
=114.2438mm^4
Hood Design Optimization:
By increasing the depth of the inner panel by 0.5 mm

Here,
Moment of inertia(max) = 4.890267305x10^6×mm^4
Moment of inertia(min) = 1.402034981x10^4×mm^4
Y = 244.513/2= 122.256682625
S=I/Y
S= 1.402034981X10^4/122.256682625
= 114.679
Conclusion
So, here the difference can be seen in the moment of inertia and the change in the section modulus can be seen by the change in the design(depth).
