Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Automotive Fender - Wheel arch design check: European Standard:

Objective: To check the European Regulation Requirement of given fender. Check: --> 30 deg Here the Fender is 10mm outside wheel zone. So regulation is OK --> 0deg Here the Fender is 9.9mm outside wheel zone. So regulation is OK --> -50deg Here the Fender is 4mm inside wheel…

Objective:

To check the given fender wheel arch design against the European standards and to suggest necessary modifications.

Wheel arch:

FENDER WHEEL ARCH. Wheel Arch is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicle. The design of the wheel arch of the fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers compartment and pedestarians from the projection of watr, mud and stones

NEED OF REGULATIONS:

In order to ensure the safety, the designs of the passenger car fenders are constrained by implementing regulations that control the wheel arch area.

There are many regulatory norms all around the world as they change with the road conditions in different regions. Now we are considering the European standards for this model.

EUROPEAN STANDARD:

STARING STAP:

There are 5 checkpoints on the sections SA, SB, SC, SD & SE as shown.

In all these checkpoints the clearance “L” should be greater than 10 mm.

Given Model:

Wheel guard should meet the above-mentioned requirement when the vehicle is in running condition and the wheels are in dead ahead position.

Section SA:

Value at Section SB:

Value at Section SC:

Value at Section SD:

Value at Section SE:

As per the European standards, the value of 'L' should be greater than 10mm. But at Section SB, the value of L is equal to 10mm and at other sections the value of 'L' is less than 10mm. So, it does not satisfy the condition L > 10mm to meet the European standards in any of the sections.

Wheel Guard Requirement:

Value of 'a' at SB:

Value of 'a' at SC:

he value of 'a' at the sections SB and SC are greater than 5mm. So, it satisfies the criteria for wheel guard requirement.

Wheel Arch Area:

CONCLUSION:

From the above results, we can conclude that the given fender does not pass the European standards for wheel arch area.
