Hood design-Week 2
AUTOMOBILE HOOD DESIGN
A car hood panel is one of the most important components of the BIW (body in white), it is considered as the closure sheet-metal component.A car hood also referred to as a bonnet . Its purpose is to provide access to the engine for repair and maintenance. Car hoods are typically constructed from steel and sometimes from aluminum . Its purpose is to provide access to the engine for repair and maintenance , safety to the car engine , less damage or less impact to pedestrian . The hood release system is common in most vehicles and typically consists of an internal hood latch/lock handle assembly. The hood lock handle is usually located under the steering wheel next to the driver’s seat .
Pedestrian -Vehicle Collision
When a pedestrian is hit by a car, he falls onto the hood. A side reference line is the trace of the highest contact point between a straight edge inclined at 45 degrees from the ground and the side of the vehicle. If the side reference line touches the fender of the car the hood is of inlaid type.. according to the side line reference When a child hits on a hood his head will fall between 1000 to 1500 mm area whereas When an adult hits on a hood his head will fall between 1500 to 2100 mm.
Hood design
according to the master section data this hood design is created
Hood Thickness Information
- Outer Panel Thickness = 0.75mm
- Inner Panel Thickness = 0.75mm
- Reinforcement Thickness = 1.5mm
inner panel
The inner panel of the hood is not visible to the customer but this is the engineering feature of the outer panel. The outer panel has the aesthetic look to it but on its own is very weak and not capable of handling force during impact. an inner panel main body forming part of a hood of a vehicle . It is an object of the present invention to provide a hood inner panel capable of minis mg a reduction of a reaction force of the hood inner panel even if a level of deformation of a hood of a vehicle increases, and ensuring a sufficient energy absorption capacity .
Emboss in car hood
Embossing is raising a material’s surface to show a design or pattern . embossing is the process of creating raised surfaces in paper or other materials by applying pressure . by creating emboss we basically remove some metal from inner panel and reduce weight and increase the performance of vehical in other hand by removing metal to create emboss we loss strength as well but by proper research and design we can create a section where the inner panel will face distortion so less amount of vibration and impact will transfer to the driver section or passenger section . emboss is also used to attach tools to hood like striker and hinge to hood .
Deep Drawing
Deep drawing is a metal forming operation in which the sheet metal is stretched into a desired shape by the mechanical action of a punch .it is used mainly in the forming of sheet metal into cup or box like structures. containers, sinks, automobile parts, such as panels and gas tanks, are among a few of the items manufactured by sheet metal deep drawing The punch pushes the sheet metal blank downward and forces it into a die cavity which forms a shape of the desired part and get perfection on desired design .
Hemming
Hemming is a sheet metal forming process in which sheets are joined by bending it usually to 180°. Automotive body panels and automotive parts here we use hemming to joint outer panel to inner panel . inner panel is to give strength to car hood and protect engine meanwhile it's not good in looks therefore we need outer panel and to joined them we do hemming process and joined them with hem glue so we can get both good looks and stregth as well .
after doing hemming process A relief angle we created as a product of hem when attaining at the corner of the sheet metals.
Mastic
Mastic is used for joining the outer pannel to inner panel with glueing . here we created 12 mm mastics which cover upto 80 mm area and give strength and attach inner and outer pannel to each other . its main purpose is to give strength to panel , create stability and reduce/absorb vibration .
tools in car hood
striker
hood striker is basically a mechanism which is use to joint car hood to BIW . it is used to shut car hood or keep close car hood so it can't be pop out and opened unintentionally for ex. while driving car if there force create by wind then the hood will open and that situation is not impossible to drive car and and cause unfortunate events .
hinge
hinge is component which is used to attache a car hood to the rest of the vehicle and also provide opening and closing movement to the hood which is necessary for repairing engine and maintenance of engine time to time .
Latch Trajectory Motion
To ensure proper closing and opening of the hood panel, the striker is placed in such a way that its trajectory is perpendicular to the hinge axis so there will be no collide of hood to car engine as well as BIW and fits perfectly to car .
