Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

objective - To calculate wheel arc radius for the given model and check whether it passes the European standard or not .

wheel arch - The wheel arch is designed considering all possible motions the tire undergoes while the vehicle is in motion. The wheel arch also ensures stopping any debris that could possibly fly outside the wheel well and hit pedestrians and also the engine compartment . to reduce this issue we calculate wheel arch it not able to eleminate whole issue but reduce this at drastically .

type of wheel arch - according to international standard their are 3 types of calculation of wheel arch .

• Japan Regulations

1. according to the picture of japan regualtions angle distance between A and B should exact 30° and A to C 50° .
2. distance between wheel and fender should be more or equal to 5mm .

• European Regulations

1. according to the picture of european regualtions angle distance between SA and SB should exact 30° and SA to SC 50° .
2. distance between wheel and fender should be more or equal to 10mm .
3. in european regualtions there are extra points SD and SE are created and there distance also should be equal or greater than 10mm and satisfy the european regualtions

• US Regulations

1. according to picture of us regualtions we take positions from -100° to 100° and create clearance check chart to validate .
2. all values should be greater than 5 mm .
3. the value of of a shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel .

since we can't make different fender for each region because it will use more material more man power to execute therefor we calculate according to european regualtions and european regualtions also satisfy us and japan regualtions as well .

• clearance of SB = 10.00 mm
• clearance of SA = 9.9490 mm
• clearance of SC = 0.113949 mm
• clearance of SD = 4.0077 mm
• clearance of SE = 8.5280 mm

Conclusion -

here only SB and SA are passed according to european regualtions as the minimum clearance L between the Fennder Wheel Arch and Wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
