Challenge

Foundation Design using SAFE

  1. Model the isolated footing provided in the week 11 challenge on SAFE. Analyze and design it to verify the size, depth, and steel provided as per calculations.

AIM: To model the isolated footing provided in the week 11 challenge on SAFE. Analyze and design it to verify the size, depth, and steel provided as per calculations.

Procedure:

Step 1: open safe software, open new model, and put input settings as metric units and IS 456:2000

Step2: Now select single footing

Bearing capacity = 150kN/m^2

FOS = 3

Settlement = 50 mm

Subgrade modulus = 3x150/0.05 = 9000 kN/m^3

Column size = 400x400 mm

Thickness of concrete footing to be 0.8m

Step3: Now define the materials.

Step4: Now after defining the material properties and assign them to the model.

To get the properties just right-click on the footing then properties will display.

Step 5: Now assign the loads. Dead and live loads.

Step6: Now assign the load combinations.

Step7: Now run the analysis.

Step8: Now add the design strip and run the analysis.

Now design the Slab.

RESULT:  By this, we can design the isolated footing using Safe software.

  1. A column of size 600x600 carrying an unfactored gravity load (DL+LL) of 1175 KN is to be supported on pile cap, which ultimately transfers load to the piles underneath. Piles of 16 metres length and 500 mm diameter are to be used. Each pile has a load carrying capacity of 200 KN. Model, analyse and design the pile cap on SAFE to evaluate the following:
  • Pile group to be used
  • Depth of pile cap
  • Longitudinal steel on top and bottom face in both directions

AIM: To design the pile cap on safe and to evaluate pile group to be used, depth of pile cap and Longitudinal steel on top and bottom face in both directions.

Procedure:

Step1: column size = 600x600

Load = 1175kN

Piles- L = 16m

Diameter = 500 mm

Loading capacity = 200kN

No of piles = 1175/200 = 5.8 = 6

Spring constant = EA/L = 25000x 196349/(16000) = 306795 N/ mm

Where E = 25000 N/mm^2

A = 196349 mm^2

L = 16000mm

Min Spacing = 2.5x Diameter = 2.5 x 500 = 1250mm

Edge spacing = 200mm

Step2: Open safe software and change settings and design preferences.

Step 3: create Grid in the model.

Step 4: Now create materials.

Step 5: Add slabs to the model.

Step6: Now add piles modified the edge distance to 300mm.

’Step7: Now create the column create at the center.

Step8: Now assign the loads

Dead loads = 587.5 kN

Live loads = 587.5 kN

Step9: Now run the analysis.

Max displacement is 0.84 hence safe

Reaction forces are according to the limit hence safe.

Now reinforcement detailing needs to be done.

X- Direction:

Y- Direction:

Step10: Run the analysis once again.

Reinforcement slab design

RESULT: Hence, by this, we can design the pile cap foundation using Safe software.
