Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender

  • A fender is a part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside).
  • The main purpose of fenders on cars is that they shield the wheels and they protect the passengers, the pedestrians, and the other vehicles from stones, mud, liquid, and other debris that can fly in the air because of the speeding rotating wheels while the car is running.

Wheel Arch

  • It is a curved part of the Fender positioned right above the Wheel.
  • For avoiding design alterations of the same vehicle to meet the different regulations in different countries, the maximum values of the concerned regulation parameters are taken into consideration for design purposes.

FENDER WHEEL ARCH DESIGN REGULATION:

  1. JAPAN REGULATION

2. USA REGULATION

3. EUROPEAN REGULATION

  • Now, let's take European standards for analysis of the given fender wheel arch design and whether it's following European standards.
  • let's create a sketch in the NX cad software using the command,
  1. DATUM PLANE: Create a plane on the top portion of the wheel.
  2. POINTS: Plotting the required points for creating the sketch and for analyzing.
  3. PROJECT CURVE: To project curves and points.
  4. DERIVED LINES: To create bisecting lines.

CONCLUSION TABLE:

POINTS IDEAL DISTANCE ACTUAL DISTANCE
1ST 10MM (+) 10MM
2ND 10MM (+) 9.94MM
3RD 10MM (-) 0.1139MM
4TH 10MM (-) 2.8875MM
5TH 10MM (-) 5.9973MM
  • As per the above table data, the given fender wheel arch design doesn't follow the European design consideration standards for designing the fender wheel arch.
