Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
REPORT :
Fender :
It is an english term for the part of an automobile that frames a wheel well,in the other words,It is the part that covers the wheel from the sidewards of the car is known has fender.

The main function of the fender is to protect the components from the dust and and stones that will fly when the car is running at a certain speeds the tyres will pick stones and hurl them in all directions that causes injuries to the pedistrains.
For this reasons a certian safety standards are design to avoid the flying of dust and stones and it is the fender should be outside from the wheel for minimum of 10 mm from the top view so that the flying of these dust particles can be reduced to maximum
From the 1900 to 2023 the evolutions of these fenders came a lot of way from the full face fender to the half face fender.

There are 5 mounting parts in the fender they are
1.Sill
2.A-Pillar
3.Body
4.Cowl
5.Drip
Drip : It is the major compartment in the fender that connects the fender and the engine compartment
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE FENDER :
1.For desigining the drip area for all the cars the design considerations and the material usage is almost ,the space requried for the drip area is designed upto the cowl top means(means the plastic part below the side mirror mounting region)
2.For Indian additional of baffle is added to the fender for imroving the NVH levels for the the diesel vehicles to reduce the vibrations in the car,this baffle is present is some cars and not present is some other cars.
3.The fender should be designed such that the maximum forces should dissipitate the forces outside of the car in case of any crash,in case of frontal crash and also for the side crash at an offset of 30mm the fender should be designed to dissipitate the force outwards so that the maximum safety should be given to passengers.
4.In case of high end cars the indicator is not provided on the fender it is provided on the ORVEM it self for low and mid end cars the led indicator is given on the fender these are the design considerations needed to be kept in mind for designing the fender.
OFFROADING CARS :
In case offroading cars the distance will be more from the fender to tyre as there more clearence is requried for spinning the tyres are also the dust and stones hurling is more that is why more clearence is requried.

SPORTZ CARS :
In case of sportz cars the cars are designed for track purpose especially the cars like ferrari,lamborgini and porsche ,these cars run on the tracks mostly and there no dust and stones are present ,there the distance from the tyre and fender is much less when compared to the normal cars.

There are different kinds of regulations they are
1.American standards
2.European Standards
3.Japan Standards
It is the eurpeaan standards of regulations for the wheel arch design

American Standard of Wheel Arch Design :

Japan Standard of Wheel Arch Design :

Measuremenst tab :

These are the values obtained for the european standards that is taken
SB = 10.00mm
SA = 9.943mm
SC =3.405mm
SD =0.754mm
SE = 5.9973mm
| Points | Distance (mm) | American Standards | Japan Standards | European Standards | |
| SA | 9.943 | PASS | - | FAIL | |
| SB | 10.00 | PASS | PASS | PASS | |
| SC | 3.45 | FAIL | FAIL | FAIL | |
| SD | 0.745 | FAIL | - | FAIL | |
| SE | 5.9973 | PASS | - | FAIL |
CONCLUSION :
In this case of european standards only the SB point is passing the analysis to here for the points like SA,SC,SDand SE the curvature of the fender needed to be incresed slighly outwards so that it can clear the design standards.
In case of american Standards the points are more in this given design hence the data is not sufficient
In case of japan design it is passing all the given standards for the points SA,SB and SC
