Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDERS:
The fenders are panels that extend from the front bumper to the vehicle’s doors. it prevents sand, mud, rocks, and liquids from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire .Moreover, automotive fenders play a major role in the safety of the vehicle as it shields the vehicle from unwanted body damage .
Impacting factors :
- The factor that drives the automotive fender market is that it protects the body of the vehicle from scratches and damages.
- Also, it prevents sand, mud, rocks, and liquids from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
- fenders ensure that the body and engine have minimal contact with corrosive elements.
- some fenders decline the overall beauty of the car and add extra weight to it which could hamper the market growth.
- automotive fenders avoid wind resistance and enhance the aerodynamics of the car, which supplements the market growth.
There are generally 5 mountings on a Front fender:-
1. Bumper
2. A-Pillar
3. Sill
4. Baffle
5. Drip

WHEEL ARCH :
It is a semicircular profile above the wheels designed for enclosing the tire within the fender. The wheel arch is designed considering all possible motions the tire undergoes while the vehicle is in motion. The wheel arch also ensures stopping any debris that could fly outside the wheel well and hit pedestrians.
There are a few standard criteria defined for designing the wheel arch. The profile has to pass through these conditions to meet the expectations.
diffrent critarea according to diffrent country;
- AMERICAN STANDARDS
- JAPAN STANDARDS
- EUROPEAN STANDARDS
Here we discuss only the European Standards,

- Construct reference lines at 30 degrees to the left and 50 degrees to the right from the vertical as shown in figure.
- These lines, when projected to the top view, create points such as A, B & C.
- The next step includes creating a point along the circumference at a distance of 150 mm from the horizontal axis as shown.
- Bisect the angle of the line to create a new line between them.
- At all these points there should be a minimum clearance of 10mm maintained to pass the requirement.
CONCLUSION:
The gap requirement at Line is not met and hence the wheel arch fails the requirement for EUROPE STANDARDS.
