Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
A Report On Wheel Arch Design
Objective:
- To inspect the given fender design to verify whether the wheel arch of the fender meets the European Standards or not.
Introduction:
- The wheel arch area is one of the important part in fender design because it deals with some of the safety regulations for pedestrians, for the vehicle itself and other vehicles around.
- When the vehicle is in motion with midium and higher speeds, the dust, stone particles and water are thrown outwards by the tyre.
- This might cause some hazards to the pedestrians and other vehicles around.
- To eleminate this activity the wheel arch plays very important role.
- The wheel arch is a semi-circular edge of the the fender located above the wheel of the vehicle.
- It's function is to cover the wheel above the ground to protect pedestrians and other vehicles around from the striking elements by the tyre.
- This could be done by having some distance(clearance) between outer edge of the tyre and the wheel arch edge so that these particles will accumulate on the baffle mounted inside the fender wheel arch.
- There are three regional design regulations for fender wheel arch design given below.
1) Japanese Regulations Requirement:
fig(1) fig(2)
- As per the Japanese requirement, the distance 'L' at all three points A,B,C within the area K needs to be measure and L must be greater than 5mm.
- At the same time for the wheel guard requirement, the distance 'a' must be greater than 5mm at a line 30 deg forward and 50 deg rearward from the central vertical of the wheel.
2) U. S. Regulations Requirement:
fig(3)
- As per the US regulations the clearance value 'L' needs to be measure at all positions from -100 deg to 100 deg and this value must be greater than 5mm.
- The wheel guard requirement, the distance 'a' must be greater than 5mm at a line 30 deg forward and 50 deg rearward from the central vertical of the wheel.
3) European Regulations Requirement:
fig(4)
- According to the European regulations the clearance value 'L' required to measure at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD & SE-SE.
- The clearance 'L' must be greater than 10mm.
- The wheel guard requirement, the distance 'a' must be greater than 5mm at a line 30 deg forward and 50 deg rearward from the central vertical of the wheel.
Procedure of measuring the distance L as per the European Regulations Requiremet using NX:
- Open the given master section in NX and create a datum plane using the selection type as 'points and curves' and select the outer most edge of the wheel.
- Once the datum plane is created, use it to sketch the lines and intersection points with the dimensions shown in fig(4).

- After this each intersection point is been projected on the fender surface by using 'project curve' command.

- The clearance value 'L' at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD & SE-SE is been measured using 'simple distance' command in analysis tab.

- For wheel guard requirement, the value 'a' is measured at a line 30 deg forward and 50 deg rearward from the central vertical of the wheel.
