Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Calculations for the wheel arch gap
Aim :-
To determine whether the car complies with the European standard by calculating the wheel arch gap at the necessary locations.
Objective:-
Learn about the various wheel arch gap specifications.
For the European standard, draw the lines at the necessary angles and locations.
Measure the distance at each angle and indicate whether the model is correct or incorrect.
Theory:-
Fender:-The fender frames the wheel well on an automobile, motorbike, or other type of vehicle (the fender underside). Its main objective is to stop the revolving tyre from launching debris including sand, dirt, gravel, liquids, and other road spray into the air. Since fenders are usually inflexible, contact with the road might harm them.

The primary function of a car's fenders is to protect the wheels from damage while also shielding the wheels from the flying debris that might result from a car's rotating wheels moving at high speeds when it is moving.
Wheel Arch:-Right over the wheel, it is a curved portion of the fender. The wheel Arch is made to shield the car cabin and pedestrian from mud, water, rocks, and other road spray. The wheel arch design must adhere to the country's specific wheel arch requirements in order to be considered appropriate there.

For avoiding design alterations of the same vehicle to meet the different regulations parameters are taken into consideration for design purpose.
Fender Wheel Arch Regulations :
Japan Regulations :

- Measure the clearance "L" for the tyre, hub, cap, and fender inside region K, then develop a clearance check chart to verify.
- In every position, L should be greater than 5mm.
- Wheel guards are necessary: At lines 30 degrees ahead and 50 degrees back from the central vertical axis of the wheel, the value of "a" should be greater than 5mm.
European Regulations:

- In order to validate, the clearance "L" should be measured at the sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, and SE-SE.
- To comply with European Regulations, the value of L at each of the five parts must be more than 10mm.
- Wheel guard requirement:- At lines 30 degrees in front of and 50 degrees behind the centre vertical axis of the wheel, the value of "a" shall be more than 5mm.
US Regulations :-

- Clearance "L" is to be checked at all positions from -100degree to 100degree and create clearance check chart to validate.
- The value of L should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations.
- Wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" should be more than 5mm at line 30degree forward and 50degree rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
Wheel Arch Area Calculations - European Regulations
We must draw a diagram on the wheel's outermost face in order to calculate the clearance between the wheel arch and the wheel. The steps are as follows.
We must open the part file from the supplied source in NX CAD, and the part file contains the wheel and fender. Therefore, we must now check for the standard of the European regulations. Now, as shown in the picture, we must establish the Datum plane at the wheel's outermost face.

After that in that plane we sketch the lines and the give the required angle from the reference of the European standard drawing by using the Rapid dimension as shown in figure.

And using the text give the proper name to the lines and the dimensions are set as per the European standard as shown in the figure.

Then we need to measure the distance from the outer most wheel to the outer most wheel arch for that we add the some ponits on the face and the angle line as shown in figure.

VALUE OF L AT SA SECTION

VALUE OF L AT SB SECTION

VALUE OF L AT SC SECTION

VALUE OF L AT SD SECTION

VALUE OF L AT SE SECTION

And the results are tabulated which is given below
| SECTION | L>10mm | RESULT |
| SA-SA | 9.9509 | FAIL |
| SB-SB | 10 | PASS |
| SC-SC | 2.6021 | FAIL |
| SD-SD | 2.7493 | FAIL |
| SE-SE | 5.8396 | FAIL |
Conclusion:-
From the aforementioned findings, we may infer that the fender does not satisfy the requirements of the European Regulations since the design does not comply with the requirement that there be a minimum of 10 mm between the fender arch wheel and the outermost wheel.
