Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM

To calculate wheel arc radius for the given model and check whether it passes the European standard or not.

WHEEL ARC

Wheel Arch is an arch shaped cavity in the fender bod, which houses a wheel. The main intention for the calculation of wheel arc radius is to position the wheel inside the fender body , because during motion the car tyres will tend to throw particles present on the road like sand, mudrocks, liquids etc.

It is a semicircular profile above wheels designed for enclosing tire within the fender. The wheel arch is designed considering all possible motions the tire undergoes while the vehicle is in motion. The wheel arch also ensures stopping any debris that could possibly fly outside the wheel well and hit pedestrians.

EUROPEAN STANDARD FOR WHEEL ARCH

Rules

  • At all five sections the CL L value should be greater then 10mm to satisfy the european regulations.
  • Wheel guard reqmt: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel

By the given part file I prepared the wheel arch calulation according to European rules

LINE SA

The gap between line SA and wheel arch is 9.9490 mm

LINE SB

The gap between line SB and whell arch is 10.00 mm

LINE SC

The gap between line SC and wheel arch is 0.1139mm

LINE SD

The gap between line SD and wheel arch is 2.8875mm

LINE SE

The gap between line SE and wheel arch is 5.9973mm

TABULATION

Section Required distance Calculated distance Result
SA 10mm 9.9490mm PASS
SB 10mm 10.000mm PASS
SC 10mm 0.1139mm FAIL
SD 10mm 2.8875mm FAIL
SE 10mm 5.9973mm FAIL

CONCLUSION

Acooding to European requirement the wheel arch is not good for manufacturing ,so styling team or design team should work on section SC,SD and SE.
