Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Wheel Arch Gap - Calculation
Aim:
To calculate the wheel arch gap at required points and check whether the car finder was passes the European standard.
Objective:
- Study about difference wheel arch gap of standard.
- Measure the distance at each angle and mention given model is pass or fail.
Fender

Fender is a part of an automobile, motorcycle other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other road spar from being thrown into the air by rotating tire. The fenders on the cars is that they shield the wheels and protect passenger the pedestrians.
Wheel Arch
It is curved part of the fender positioned above the wheel. The wheel arch is designed such that it protects both the pedestrian and car cabin from mud, water and rocks and other road spary. Difference countries have difference wheel arch regulation in place, and the wheel arch design has to comply with them to be deemed usable in that country.
For avoiding design alteration of the same vehicle to meet the different regulation parameters are taken into consideration.
Fender Wheel arch Regulation
Japan Regulation

The clearance “L” for tire, hub, cap and fender is to be measure within area K and create clarence check chart to validate.
The value of L should be greater than 5mm at all position.
Wheel guard: The value of “a” should be more than 5mm at line30dregee forward and 50degree rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
European Regulations:

The clearance “L” should be measured at section SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE and create clearance check chart to validate.
At all the five section the valve of L should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regulation.
Wheel guard requirement: The value of” a” should be more than 5mm at line 30 degree forward and 50-degree rearward from central vertical axis.
US Regulation:

Clearance “L” is to be checked at all positions from-100degree to 100 degree and create clearance chart to validate.
The value of “L” should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations.
Wheel guard requirement: The value of “a “should be more than 5mm dt line 30 degree forward and 50-degree rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
Procedure
- According to the European standards, the design of fender and wheel arch should pass the wheel guard requirement.
- Frist create a plane with origin as centre of the wheel plane.
- Then sketch using lines along with given dimension s as SA, SB, SC, SD and SE
- After sketching project, the intersection points on to the fender.
- Then use measure distance tool and calculate the clearance between sketch lines and wheel arc.

The distance between SB point to fender wheel arch distance SB= 10mm.

The distance between SA point to fender wheel arch distance SA= 9.9490mm.

The distance between SC point to fender wheel arch distance SC= 0.112637mm.

The distance between SD point to fender wheel arch distance SD= 2.6977mm.

The distance between SE point to fender wheel arch distance SE= 5.9017mm.
For “a” valves, SB = 43.9268mm

For valves “a”
SC = 38.6842mm

Conclusion:
From the above results we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European Regulations as the minimum clearance between the fender arch wheel to the outer most wheel is 10mm and this design does not meet so this fender model is fail to European standards.
