Wheel Arch gap - Calculations

Aim:

To calculate the wheel arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the european standard.

Objective:

Study about the different wheel arch gap standard.

Drawn the lines at the required angle and points for the European standard.

Measure the distance at each angles and mention given model is pass r fail.

Theory:

Fender:

Fender is the part of a car that protects and frames its wheel and keep mud from splashing it. Most modern vehicles have fenders on their front wheels. It is the part of a car, truck or motorcycle that surrounds the wheel sell. The primary function of fender is to prevent dirt and debris from being thrown into the air by the tire. The fender is located over the wheel of the vehicle. As such, there are four fenders on a typical vehicle: front right, front left, rear right and rear left.

TYPES OF FENDER:

1. FULL FENDER TYPE: Full fender type is traditional type of fender where more material consumption is observed. This type is used in old design of auto mobiles where it increases the overall weight and thus reduces performance. The maintenance also relatively more due to more surf.

2.HALF BUMPER TYPE:

Half bumfer type is moden design where less material consumption is observed, so productivity increases by reducing size of blank and thus providing more the maintenance also relatively low compared to full bumper type.

JAPAN REQUIREMENTS FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC:

The clearance 'L' for ire, hub, cap and fender is to be measured within area K and create clearance check chart to validate.

The value of L should be greater than 5 mm at all positions

wheel guard requirement : The value of a should be more than mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

European Regulations:

The clearance 'L' should be measured at sections SA-SA,SB-SB,SC-SC,SD-SD,SE-SE and clearance check chart to validate.

At all the five sections the value of L should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European Regulations.

Wheel guard requirement: The value of a should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

US Regulations:

Clearance 'L' is to be checked at all positions from 100° to 100° and create clearance check chart to validate.

The value of L should be greater tham 5mm to satisfy the regulations.

Wheel guard requirment: The value of a should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel

Calculation of wheel arch area to European regulations

For Calculation of clearance between wheel arch and wheel we have to create a sketch on the uter most face of the wheel. The procedure of which is given below.

A datum plane is created at the outermost face of the wheel.

The sketch is created on the new datum plane.

A Horiontal line is drawn across the center of the wheel.

A perpendicular line SA is dropped at he center of wheel.

Two lines SB ans SC are created at 30° forward of SA and 50° rearward of SA respectively

A ponit is created 150 m vertically above the center line.

A line SE is drawn from the wheel center and passe form the point created

Another line SD is drawn form the wheel center and passes from the point created.

Design Criteria has been followed as follows,

A sketch is created on the datum plane which is at the outer most portion f the wheel

Create the intersection points on the line which are intersecting at the fender outer most portion

Project those points on to the fender part.

Measure the distance between sketch intersection points and the project point. Then we get the each section.

Section Clearance Result

SA 9.94<10 Fail

SB 10>10 Pass

SC 0.11<10 Fail

SD 2.9<10 Fail

SE 6.0<10 Fail

Conclusion:

The value of Clearance (L) is measured at all five location and tabulated. The table shows that only a section SB have 10 mm clearance and at remaining four section value will not have more than 10 mm with he help of measure data, the given fender does not qualify the European for heel arc area.
