Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Wheel Arch Challenge
Aim: To calculate the wheel arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle.
Japanese requirement for wheel arch
The clearance L of the tyre, hub, cap & fender in three different positions must be greater than 5 mm.
The guard requirement value ‘a’ must be more than 5 mm at 30° forward and 50° rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

US Regulation Requirement
Clearance check should be carried out all positions from -100° to 100°
All the values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations.
The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5mm at a line 30° forward and 50° rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

European Standard for Wheel Arch

European standard states that the car passes the test when it satisfies the required dimensions Clearance L value should be greater than 10 mm at SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SE-SE at all five sections.
Wheel Guard requirement, the value ‘a’ shall be more than 5mm at a line 30° forward and 50° rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
The below snaps shows the various position measured in NX for the given Part
Lines created at 30°, 50° 150 mm from x axis.

The distance of L at section SA-SA is 9.9489 mm

The distance of L at section SB-SB is 10.00 mm

The distance of L at section SC-SC is 0.1139 mm

The distance of L at section SD-SD is -2.8875 mm

The distance of L at section SE-SE is -5.9973 mm

Wheel guard distance (a) at 30° line is 48.6263 mm

Wheel guard distance (a) at 50° line is 43.3597 mm
