Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM- To calculate the minimum clearance between the wheel's outermost edge and the Fender wheel arc edge as per the European Standard.

Subject-

-Wheel Arch Standards are primarily formulated to protect pedestrians from debris thrown out by the wheels during automobile operation. These standards ensure adequate setback for the wheel from the fender surface, such that debris thrown up by the wheels will be trapped inside the wheel well and therefore will not injure nearby pedestrians.

Procedure-

-In this project, we have to examine the minimum clearance between the wheel's outermost edge and the edge of the Fender wheel arc which should be more than or equal to 10mm as per the European standard.

-Another standard to measure the clearance is as per the Japanese standard. In this, the minimum clearance allowed between the wheel's outermost edge and the edge of the Fender wheel arc should be more than or equal to 5mm.

-Hence, we need to calculate as per the European standard and below is the mentioned steps to calculate the clearance.

Step 1- Draw a Horizontal and Vertical line mutually perpendicular. Further, we need to draw three lines where,

Line 1= 30 degrees with respect to the vertical line in the anti-clockwise direction.

Line 2= Vertical line

Line 3= 50 degrees with respect to the vertical line in the clockwise direction.

Line 4= 150mm upwards with respect to the horizontal line and intersects a line to the point that occurred at the distance from the center of the quadrant.

Line 5= Bisected the line between the 50-degree line and the line with respect to the 150mm distance from the horizontal line.

Step 2- Create intersection points to each of the lines with respect to the edge of the Fender wheel arc.

Step 3- Create the intersection points on the fender wheel arc face with respect to the intersection points created on the lines.

Step 4- Measure the distance between the two intersection points with respect to all the lines.

1) Distance between Line 1 and Intersection Point 1-

2) Distance between Line 2 and Intersection point 2-

3) Distance between Line 3 and Intersection point 3-

4) Distance between Line 4 and Intersection point 4-

5) Distance between Line 5 and Intersection point 5-
