Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

Wheel arch:

The wheel arch is the semi-circular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The wheel arch is a part of the fender and Curvature in shape. While designing the Wheel arch it should be in mind that the wheel should be inside the fender. if the wheel is outside the fender, then it causes a lot of damage to the pedestrians and also to the car so the wheel should be under the fender. The shaped part of the bodywork of a car or other vehicle that allows the wheel to be accessed, and in the case of front wheels, enables them to be steered. Wheel arch is also known as Wheel well.

Regulation of Wheel arch:

There are three different types of regulations in the international market

  1. JAPAN REGULATION
  2. EUROPEAN REGULATION
  3. US REGULATION

Calculations of the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes as per European standards.

  1. Take the outline of the wheel and the fender.
  2. Make the centre of the wheel circle.
  3. Draw horizontal and vertical perpendicular axes from the centre of the wheel circle.
  4. Draw lines at 30 degrees and 50 degrees from the concentre.
  5. Make a point on the fender line at 150mm from the horizontal.
  6. Extend a line to this point from the centre.
  7. Then make a line that is exactly between the 50-degree line and the line made on the 150mm point.

Conclusion:

The design of the fender needs to modify, As per European regulation requirements, the clearance at a given point should be a minimum of 10mm, more than 10mm can be accepted but at only one point there is 10mm clearance, and another point clearance value is less than 10mm so the car will not pass the in international standards.
