Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
#5 FENDER DESIGN - WHEEL ARCH CHALLENGE
AIM:
To examine the Fender and wheel arch whether is passes European noems standard.
OBJECTIVE OF THE WHEEL ARCH:
Main objective of the project is to calculate the Wheel arch area, and also conclude, If the car will pass
the European standards or not. Because of countries are follow the different regulation.
To create a line from the centre of wheel to fender wheel arch area of SA,SB,SC,SD and SE lines.
WHEEL ARCH:
Wheel arch is the semi - circular part of the vehicle is position on the top of the wheel. Wheel arch
claddings are there to stop water and dirt ingress from getting into tight spots around the wings of the car to
prevent corrosion.
They also protect any electrics or pipework from the water. They are originally made for vehicles when are
supposed to take more abuse in terms of off road or water wading. It prevents scraping of paint near wheel
arches also prevents water from getting inside the panel which could lead to rust.
Wheel arch is must be shielded the wheel, because it will ensure that passengers and pedestrian are not
affect by the stones, mud, water from the bottom of the car.
Fender Wheel Arch Regulations
Japan Regulations

The clearance ‘L’ for tire, hub, cap and fender is to be measured within area K and create clearance check
chart to validateThe value of L should be greater than 5mm at all positionsWheel guard requirement
The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical
axis of the wheel
European Regulations

The Clearance ‘L’ should be measured at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE and create
clearance check chart to validateAt all the five sections the value of L should be greater than 10mm
to satisfy the European RegulationsWheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ should be more than
5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
US Regulations

- Clearance ‘L’ is to be checked at all positions from -100° to 100° and create clearance check chart to validate
- The value of L should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel
Calculation of wheel arch area according to European Regulations
For calculation of clearance between Wheel Arch and Wheel we have to create a sketch on the outer most face of the wheel. The procedure of which is given below.
- A Datum Plane is created at the outermost face of the wheel
- The sketch is created on the new Datum Plane
- A Horizontal line is drawn across the centre of the wheel
- A perpendicular line SA is dropped at the centre of the wheel
- Two lines SB and SC are created at 30° forward of SA and 50° rearward of SA respectively
- A point is created 150mm vertically above the centre line
- A line SE is drawn from the wheel centre and passes from the point created
- Another line SD is drawn from the centre of the wheel and in the middle of lines SC and SE
* SKETCH
Software Used: NX 12 (CAD)
Sketch is drawn on the wheel face as per the European standards provided and projected on the wheel
arch at sections SA, SB, SC, SD and SE to measure 'L', 'a and wheel arch area.
If we need to finding the Wheel arch area, then we have sketch on the tire surface.

CONCLUSION:
The given fender is Fail the European Regulation for Wheel Arch Area. Because of clearance value is varies
between the section to section. Due to the Tire is Go outside direction. it is danger for pedestrian safety as
well as aesthetic look of the car also bad. so i recommended the report to styling team whether change in design.
