Section Modulus calculation and optimization
#4 SECTION MODULUS
Objective:
The main aim of the challenge is to calculate the section modulus of the previously designed hood
for analyzing its strength and also optimizing the design to see the difference in the bending strength of the hood.
by using the bellow formula
Section modulus:
Section modulus is a direct measure of strength of any sectional area of an object about an
reference axis(neutral axis)Strength is nothing but, capable of supporting greater loads, so higher the
strength it has a high capable of supporting greater loads. This strength can measured directly from Section
modulus formula,
Formula for section modulus S=I/Y
where,
S - section module
I- moment of inertia
y- Distance from the reference line(neutral axis)
Moment of inertia:
Moment of inertia is nothing but offering resistance against of moment, bending or twisting,
i.e if we applied any external load on the body, how much resistance its offering to tend to deform.
higher the value of moment of inertia , have higher resistance to deform under certain load, hence we can
say that moment of inertia directly proportional to the strength of the material , and strength of the material
can be calculated with the help of section modulus.
Neutral axis:
Axis Neutral line taken form the off of section module. Neutral axis towards positive or negative side the overall
strength of the body will decrease , because when nuetral axis line lies on the middle of the section only have
higher strength at particular point, so, here 'Y' value was inversely proportional to section modulus.

Total length of 'Y' value was 488.9mm
# Y =L/2 = 488.9mm
= 244.45 mm
Here the moment of inertia was calculated by using the NX-software obtained values are
TRAIL #1

IMAX:8.3713X105mm4
Imin:4.5023x103mm4
Total length of 'Y' value was 488.8252mm
So,at neutral axis we need 'Y' value:-Y/2=488.9/2=244.45 mm
1)Section modulus(S):-I/Y=8.3713X105mm4/244.45mm
=3.424X103mm3(Maximum strength).
2) Section modulus(S):-I/Y=4.5023x103mm4/244.45mm
=0.01841x103mm3(minimum strength).
So the strength of the hood should be various from 0.0184x103mm3to 3.424X103mm3
Now, one more trail is that, here the inner panel curve offsetting outside by 0.5 mm increasing in cross
sectional area,the results shown below.
TRAIL 2#

IMAX:8.3648X105mm4
Imin:4.6983x103mm4
Total length of 'Y' value was 488.8252mm
So,at neutral axis we need 'Y' value:-Y/2=488.9/2=244.45 mm
1)Section modulus(S):-I/Y=8.3648X105mm4/244.45mm
=3.421X103mm3(Maximum strength).
2) Section modulus(S):-I/Y=4.6983x103mm4/244.45mm
=0.01921x103mm3(minimum strength).
So the Trail 2 strength of the hood should be various from 0.019x103mm3to 3.421X103mm3 The strength
of the material also depends upon the composition of material ,thickness and cross sectional area of an object.
CONCLUSION:-
The strength of the material is directly proportional to the moment of inertia, hence increase in
sectional area there is have increase in overall mass of an object ,hence have increase in strength.
