Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
- European Regulations Requirement:-

- Take the outline of the when and the fender.
- Make the center of the when circle.
- Draw horizontal and vertical perpendicular axis from the center of the wheel circle.
- Draw lines at 300 and 500 line from the horizontal.
- Make point on the fender line at 150mm from the horizontal.
- Extent a line to this point from the center.
- Then make a bisecting line between 300 and 500 line made on the 150mm point.
- Now project that points on the wheel curve as well as on the fender curve.
- Measure the distance between the points on the wheel curve and fender curve. All of these should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regulations requirement. This distance is called as “a”.
- Check whether the design passes these conditions and calculate whether it can pass the European regulations requirement.
- Now sketch is ready.

Now let us measure the distance between the points at the sections.
- SA
27.83mm > 10mm

- SB
44.75mm > 10mm

- SC
38.35mm > 10mm

Now to find the horizontal distance (L) between the wheel and the fender. This distance should be at least 5mm from SA, SB, SC, SD and SE section.
- SA Section

Distance between SA point and fender outer curve = 9.94mm (PASS).
- SB Section

Distance between SB point and fender outer curve = 10mm (PASS).
- SC Section

Distance between SC point and fender outer curve = 0.11 (FAIL)
4. SD Section

Distance between SC point and fender outer curve = 2.88 (FAIL)
- SE Section

Distance between SC point and fender outer curve = 5.99 (PASS)

Conclusion: -
The given design satisfies all European standards but one, i.e. the distance from SC point to the fender curve (Which is just 0.11mm), which is way below the recommended 5mm minimum distance. Therefore, this fender cannot pass the European standards. The design should be reverted back to the Class A designer telling him to modify the design and increase the gap there.
