Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
For wheel arch gap requirements for European contries,
Consider the below figure,
- Created a vertical line through the centre of the tyre and Marked point 'A' at the intersection of the fender edge and the vertical line.
- From the centre of the tyre created another line to left with an angle of 30 with vertical and a line to right with an angle of 50 degree with vertical.
- Marked point 'B' at the intersection of 30 degree inclined line and fender edge.
- Marked the point 'C' at the intersection of 50 degree inclined line and fender edge.
- Created a horizontal line through the centre of the tyre.
- At a vertical distance of 150mm from the 'line through the centre of tyre' drawn another horizontal line, Marked point 'D' at the intersection of this line and the fender edge.
- drawn a line connecting the point 'D' and centre of the tyre.
- Created a derived line reference with the lines through 'C' and 'D', and Marked point 'E' at intersection of this line and fender edge.
At these marked points A,B,C,D and E the wheel arch gap 'L' (gap between tyre outer edge to fender from top view.) should be equal or greater than 10mm for the european standards. (tyre should be inside the fender.)

Wheel arch gap L at 'A'

- Here at "A" the wheel arch gap L is very much closer to 10mm, So we can consider it as fulfilling the european requirements.

Wheel arch gap L at 'B'

- Here at point "B" the european standard is fulfilled, wheel arch gap is 10mm
Gap L at 'C'

- Here at point 'C' the wheel arch gape is about zero so, european standard will not pass by the car

Gap L at 'D'

- Here at point 'D' the wheel is outside the fender about 6mm, that is wheel arch gap is -6mm.
- So the Car will not pass European standard

Gap L at 'E'

- Here at point 'E' again the wheel is projected outside the fender about 3mm, wheel arch gap is -2.88mm.
- So the car will not pass the European standard.

Tabulated values of the L at every points.
| SI.NO | POINT | Wheel arch gap(L) | whether passes the european standard or fail |
| 1. | A | 9.94mm(aproximately 10mm) | pass |
| 2. | B | 10mm | pass |
| 3. | C | 0.1mm (about zero) | fail |
| 4. | D | -5.99mm (tyre projected outside from the fender) | fail |
| 5. | E | -2.88mm (tyre projected outside from the fender) | fail |
Conclusion:
This car is not fullfilled the European standard. will not passes the european standards
