Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER DESIGN – WHEEL ARCH-
OBJECTIVE:-
Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
WHEEL ARCH:-
The shaped part of the bodywork of a car or other vehicle that allows the wheel to be accessed, and in the case of front wheels, enable them to be steered. Wheel arch is the semi - circular part of the vehicle is position on the top of the wheel. Wheel arch claddings are there to stop water and dirt ingress from getting into tight spots around the wings of the car to prevent corrosion.
Wheel arch is must be shielded the wheel, because it will ensure that passengers and pedestrian are not affect by the stones, mud, water from the bottom of the car.
JAPANESE STANDARDS:-

- Clearance must be greater than 5 mm in all the three positions.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30˚ forward and 50˚ rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
EUROPEAN STANDARDS:-

- At all five sections the clearance value should be greater than 10 mm.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 10 mm at a line 30˚ forward and 50˚rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
US STANDARDS:-

- All values should be greater than 5 mm.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm 30˚ forward and 50˚ rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
WHEEL ARCH CALCULATION:-
We will consider European Standards as per the instruction in the challenge to be followed.
PROCEDURE:-

- First create a datum plan through curve and point on center of wheel via outer curve.
- create a sketch as European standards on datum plan and make a point on center of wheel.
- Project all intersection point on Fr-fender face.
- Now go to analysis and measure distance between intersection points and projected points.
AT SECTION SA:-

The clearance between SA line and wheel arc is +9.9489 mm also the line SA lies inside the fender so it is positive value.
AT SECTION SB:-

The clearance between SB line and wheel arc is +10 mm also the line SB lies inside the fender so it is positive value.
AT SECTION SC:-

The clearance between SC line and wheel arc is -0.1139 mm also the line SC lies outside the fender so it is negative value.
AT SECTION SD:-

The clearance between SD line and wheel arc is -2.8875 mm also the line SD lies outside the fender so it is negative value.
AT SECTION SE:-

The clearance between SE line and wheel arc is -5.9973 mm also the line SE lies outside the fender so it is negative value.
TABULATION:-
| SECTION | CALCULATED CLEARANCE | MINIMUM CLEARANCE | PASS/FAIL |
| SA | 9.9489 | 10 | FAIL |
| SB | 10 | 10 | PASS |
| SC | -0.1139 | 10 | FAIL |
| SD | -2.8875 | 10 | FAIL |
| SE | -5.9973 | 10 | FAIL |
CONCLUSION:-
the wheel arch does not satisfy the requirements as per the European standards.
