Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

FENDER WHEEL ARCH

Fender

A fender is the part of a car, truck, motorcycle, or other vehicles that frames or covers a wheel well. Its main purpose is to prevent debris, rocks, mud, liquids, sand, and other road debris from getting thrown in the air while the tire rotates.

The “fender” typically refers to the front panel that covers the front wheels, and the “quarter panel” typically refers to the rear panel that covers the wheel that also includes the roof pillar. The “bumper” is the front and rear ends of a motor vehicle to absorb impact in a minor collision.

Wheel Arch

- The shaped part of the bodywork of a car or other vehicle that allows the wheel to be accessed, and in the case of front wheels, enable them to be steered.

- Different countries have different wheel arch regulations in place, and the wheel arch design has to comply with them to be deemed usable in that country.
For avoiding design alterations of the same vehicle to meet the different regulations in different countries, the maximum values of the concerned regulation parameters are taken into consideration for design purpose.

Fender Wheel Arch Regulations

JAPANESE REGULATION

-In the japanese regulation the it contains only three section which is centre line of the wheel arch and 30deg and 50deg line from the centre of the wheel arch.

-If the three section of wheel arch exeeds the value of 5mm .the design is considered to be passed.

US REGULATIONS

-The US regulation contains more sections than any other regulation . in this regulation the section are divided into every 10 degree from 120degree to 180 degree.

-For each and every section the wheel arch which is away from the 5mm , wheel arch is considered to be passed.

EUROPEAN REGULATION

-The Clearance ‘L’ should be measured at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE and create clearance check chart to validate.

-At all the five sections the value of L should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European Regulations.

-Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

AT SECCTION SA-SA

SA=9.94MM

AT SECTION SB-SB

SB=10MM

AT SECTION SC-SC

SC=0.1MM

AT SECTION SD-SD

SD=2.88MM

AT SECTION SE-SE

SE=5.99MM

TEST RESULTS
SA +9.94 FAILED
SB +10 PASSED
SC -0.11 FAILED
SD -2.88 FAILED
SE -5.99 FAILED

RESULTS

-From the above tabular column it can be clearly understand that the fender wheel arch which was given was failed . According to the european regulation only one section SB is qualified ,other section does'nt because the wheel was not away 10mm from the extreme outermost layer of the wheel face.
