Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

INTRODUCTION:

  • The fender wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle.
  • The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender. The corrosion had occurred around the splash plate at the back of the wheel arch.
  • The wheel arch fender is made up of rubber and plastic that can be installed on the front fender.
  • The fender can prevent your vehicle from collisions to make your car more stylish.
  • The fender can effectively protect your vehicle from scratches and abrasion.

AIM:

  • The clearance 'L' measures between the fender wheel arch area and the outside face of the wheel should meet the European standard regulations.

SIGNIFICANCE OF FENDER WHEEL ARCH DESIGN:

  • The clearance 'a' value varies between the fender wheel arch points and wheel depending upon the global country's road conditions. when the road has a bumping shape surface the clearance 'a' value is to be increased to avoid the knocking of the fender on the wheel while closed suspension.
  • When the road has a flat surface the clearance 'a' value is to be decreased because there is no unexpected contact of the fender on the wheel.
  • The wheel arch fender design structure should be mounted outside the face of the wheel to protect the pedestrian and unwanted particles thrown into the engine compartment.

FENDER WHEEL ARCH DESIGN:

  • There are certain standards to design the wheel arch of the fender based on the global location.

JAPAN REGULATIONS:

  • Measure clearance L of the tire, hub, cap, and fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance part to validate.
  • Clearance must be greater than 5 mm in all three positions.
  • Wheel guard requirements: The value of 'A' shall be more than 5 mm at line 30 forward and 50 rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

US REGULATIONS:

  • Make clearance check details on all positions from-100 to 100 and make the clearance check table.
  • All the values should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulations.
  • The value of 'a' shall be more than mm at line 30 forward and 50 rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

FENDER WHEEL ARCH DESIGN USING EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:

  • Measure clearance L at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, and SE-SE and produce a clearance check chart to validate.
  • At all five sections the clearance L value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations.
  • Wheel guard requirements: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at aline 30 forward and 50 rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

PROCEDURE TO MEASURE THE WHEEL ARCH CLEARANCE:

  • The wheel and fender part is given.
  • SKETCH the lines by selecting the select plane option as wheel flat surface.
  • Draw lines from the center of the wheel at 90 degrees and name it SA. from a 90-degree line draw lines with 50 degrees (SC) and 30 degrees (SB).
  • Draw a line with a distance of 150 mm from the 0-degree line.
  • Connect the center of the wheel to that point and name it SE.
  • By dividing the SC and SE lines draw a line from the center of the wheel to the outer portion of the fender.
  • Using the analysis tool measure all the distances.
  • From the observations SA= 10 mm, SB=9.95 mm, SC=0.1139, SD=-2.887, SE=-5.993.

MEASUREMENT OF 'L' CLEARANCE:

MEASURING THE CLEARANCE VALUE 'a' FOR WHEEL GUARD REQUIREMENT:

  1. Clearance 'a' at a 30-degree line

ii. Clearance 'a' at 50-degree lines.

According to European standard regulations, the 'a' value clearance should be greater than 5mm.

CONCLUSION:

  • From the above 'a' clearance tabular column observation. It meets the European standard regulations.
