Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Objective:

To check the wheel arch gap between fender arch and wheel as per European standard.

Wheel arch gap is the gap required to be maintained between the fender edge to the outer edge of the tire for safety purposes. While the vehicle is moving forward, the tire picks up the stone particles and threw away. That will hit the pedestrian. To ensure safety the fender should lie outer from the tire edge at a certain distance.

Japan requirement:

Distance between the tire outer edge and fender edge should be greater than 5mm from all positions at a line 30 deg forward and 50 deg rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

European standard:

The clearance should be more than 10mm from the five sections.

US standard:

Section value from -2o deg to 120 deg divided equally by 5 deg difference. Clearance should be 5mm.

Wheel arc calculation:

As per European standard a section line of SB at an angle of 30 deg, SA is vertical, SC at an angle of 50 deg, and SE is created at a height of 150mm from the horizontal line. SD is the midline at an equal distance between the SC & SE.

The fender edge is projected to the sketch to get the intersection point. After that, the points are projected onto the fender surface to find the distance between the fender and wheel

SB-SB

SA-SA

SC-SC

SD-SD

SE-SE

SA-SA--> 10 (Pass)

SB-SB--> 9.9490 (Fail)

SC-SC--> 0.113949 (Fail)

SD-SD--> -3.79955 (Fail)

SE-SE--> -8.0430 (Fail)

On the Rear side, the wheel lies outside the fender. Only SA-SA satisfies the European standard value. Other section lines don't meet the European standard value.

The styling team should extend the fender arc outer to meet the European standard.
