Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Report on Fender Design - Wheel Arch
Introduction
- The wheel arch is the semicircular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of a vehicle.
- The design of Wheel arch of a fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers' compartment and pedestrians from projection of water, mud, and stones.
- The wheel arch fenders must be compliant with the standards and regulations set by the respective countries.
The objective of this challenge is to make sure the wheel arch of the fender is compliant with the European standards.

- The Clearance "L" as shown in the European standards at all the five sections SB-SB, SA-SA, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE should be greater than 10mm.
- Wheel Guard Requirement is the value "a" which shall be more than 5mm at the section SB 30deg forward and section SC 50deg rearward from the centre vertical axis of the wheel.
RESULTS
We draw a sketch on the wheel face as per the European Standards provided and project all the sections on the wheel arch of the fender and measure "L" and "a" and find the area.

Measuring "L" across all sections from the edge of wheel and the arch of fender
- Value at section SB is 10mm

- Value at Section SA is 9.9490mm

- Value at section SC is -0.1139mm

- Value at section SD is -2.8875

- Value at section SE is -5.9973

Measuring "a" across all sections from the edge of wheel and the arch of fender
- Value of "a" at Section SB which is at 30deg forward from the centre vertical axis of wheel is 46.1330mm

Observation
From these observations made we know that the wheel arch of fender is not compliant with the European standards and that some changes need to be made with regards to "L" at the failed sections
