Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Project Title : FENDER DESIGN - WHEEL ARCH

Objective :

Calculate the wheel arch area and prove whether the car will pass the europen standards or not.

Introduction of Wheel Arch :

The design of the wheel arch of a fender should be such that it must have shield wheels and protect both passengers compartment and pedestrians from the projection of water, mud, and stones. For safety reasons to the pedestrians and to avoid the damage to the car we have to avoid the chipping inside and outside of the car, thus the concept of fender wheel arch area is came into picture. The wheel arch area is the distance between the wheel tyre outer surface to the fender outer surface of the car asa shown in below picture.

In this standard, the length should be more than 10mm, between outer fender and outer surface of the wheel. SB point is at 30 degree angle from the center line. The SC line should be at 50 degree angle from the center line. SE line should be at the meeting point of fender and the line. It should be 150mm above from the center horizontal line. The SD line Should at Center of SC & SE.

Procedure :

Applying European standards to given Fender & wheel data :

Software Used : Siemens NX-CAD.

The sketch is drawn on the wheel face as per the european standrads provided and projected on the wheel arch at section SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE to measure "L", "a" and wheel arch area.

Calculation the value of clearance "L".

The clearance "L" as shown in the above fig at all the five sections SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE should be geater than 10mm.

1) Measuring "L" for the given Wheel and Fender at SA

The value of "L" at SA = 9.95mm

2) Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SB

The value of "L" at SB = 10mm

3) Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SC

The value of "L" at SC = 0.113mm

4) Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SD

The Value of "L" at SD = 2.8440mm

5) measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SE

The value of "L" at SE = 5.9018mm

Clearance "L" optained at section SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE.

CUNCLUSION :

From the above result optained, only at the position SB we got 10mm clearance between fender and wheel tyre outer edges, but at the remaining 4 positions it is less than 10mm clearance which is not acceptable. Hence the design of fender has to be modified to pass the European regulations.
