Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM:

This project shows that examine the given fender wheel arch design to verify if the wheel arch of the fender meets the European standards.

FENDER:

  • Fender is the US English term for the part of an automobile (vehicle body) that frames a wheel well (the fender underside).
  • Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
  • When vehicle is moving, tyres pick up stones and others and hurl them in all directions. Fenders are basically present to prevent any injuries to pedestrians and contain the motion of these particles
  • Most passenger automobiles have four fenders, one over each wheel. For vehicles with a narrow car body that exposes the tire, the fender is an exposed curve over the top of the tire. For wide body vehicles that cover the tire, the fender forms the wheel well surrounding the tire, and is not directly visible from above the car body.
  • Wheel wells tend to be much larger than the diameter of the tire, because they do not move with the tire suspension and consequently must be large enough to allow the full range of tire motion on the suspension without touching the interior of the wheel well.
  • More elaborate designs include fender skirts for enclosing the outside edge of the wheel well, and stylized pontoon fenders for exposed fenders.

FENDER WHEEL ARCH:

  • Fender wheel arch is the semi-circular part positioned above the wheel of the vehicle.
  • the car was the large in size , high defination headlights that extend to the wheel arch.
  • the most important body was a change that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender.

EUROPEAN STANDARDS FOR WHEEL ARCH:

the clearance L is shown in above fig 5 sections

SA-SA , SB-SB , SC-SC , SD-SD AND SE-SE .This should be greater than 10mm.

Wheel guard requirement: The value of a shall be more than 5mm at a line 30degree Forward and 50degree backward from center vertical axis of the wheel.

OBTAINING RESULTS:

software used:NX 12

Sketch is drwan on the wheel faced as per the european standards provided and projected on the wheel arch at section SA ,SB , SC ,SD AND SE to measure L, a and wheel arch area.

MEASURING THE VALUES OF CLEARANCE "L" AT ALL SECTIONS:

a)Measuring "L" for the given wheel and the fender at SB.

The value of "L" at SB=10MM

b)Measuring "L" for the given wheel and the fender at SA

The value of "L" at SA=9.9496MM

C)Measuring "L" for the given wheel and the fender at Sc

The value of "L" at Sc=0.113949mm

d))Measuring "L" for the given wheel and the fender at SD.

The value of "L" at SD=2.8875mm

E)Measuring "L" for the given wheel and the fender at SE.

The value of "L" at SE=5.9973mm

ALL VIEW SECTIONS:

  • The clearance value 'L' was measured and found to be as follows:
  • Section Required clearance (MM) Measured Clearance 'L' (MM) Remarks.

  • SB 10 10MM PASS
  • SA 10 9.94MM FAIL
  • SC 10 0.113MM FAIL
  • SD 10 2.87MM FAIL
  • SE 10 5.975MM FAIL

.

From the above observations the positions SA SC SD SE are less than 10mm which is necessary to pass the European standards. Hence, the frontfender wheel arch does not pass the European standard

CONCLUSION:

From the above measurements it was observed that the clearance value 'L' at sections SA,SC,SD & SE was lower than 10mm and therefore it does not satisfy the European regulations. Whereas, the clearance value 'a' was more than 5mm at a line 30° forward and 50° rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
