Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER DESIGN – WHEEL ARCH
Objective: -
To calculate the ga between the wheel arch of the fender to the tire and to conclude that the car will pass the European standard or not.
Fender: -
A fender is the curved portion of the car's body that sits over and houses the wheels. The purpose of a fender is pretty simple. Its purpose is to keep mud, rocks, and other road debris from being thrown around by the tires. In other words, the fender is a housing for the wheels that keeps road debris contained. If there was nothing covering the wheels, all kinds of debris would be kicked up by the rotating tires.
There are two types of fender: -
- Full bumper fender
- Half bumper fender
Most commonly used fender is Half bumper fender because it has less sheet metal area as compared to the full bumper fender, remaining parts are covered with plastic components.
Wheel arch standards: -
Wheel arch standard means that the gap between wheel arch of the fender to the tire. Different countries have different standards according to there government regulations. Some of which are: -
- Japanese standard
- European standard
- US standard
In this challange, we need to ensure whether the given car passes the European standards. Below fig. refers to the european standard

Procedure: -
- Draw the lines on the outer edge of the tire based on the european standards

- Make lines as a surface and check the gap between fender outer to the tire at different points as per european standards.
- As per European standard at section gap must be great than 10mm.
- SECTION SA-SA : At this section, this car fails to meet the standard since it is lesser than 10mm (Gap : 9.9489mm)

- SECTION SB-SB: At this section, this car maintains the standard (Gap : 10mm)

- SECTION SC-SC : At this section, this car fails to meet the standard since it is lesser than 10mm (Gap: -0.113667mm)

- SECTION SD-SD : At this section, this car fails to meet the standard since it is lesser than 10mm (Gap: -2.5780mm)

- SECTION SE-SE : At this section, this car fails to meet the standard since it is lesser than 10mm (Gap: -5.9751mm)

Test results: -
| SECTION | GAP | RESULT |
| SA-SA | 9.9489 | FAIL |
| SB-SB | 10 | PASS |
| SC-SC | -0.113667 | FAIL |
| SD-SD | -2.5780 | FAIL |
| SE-SE | -5.9751 | FAIL |
The given model doesn't satisfy the european standard. Increase the clearance on section SA-SA, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE is the suggestion for the styling team inorder to pass the European standard
CONCLUSION:-
Thus the wheel arch gap is checked at required point as per European standard. Given model fail to maintain the standard.
