Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

REPORT: FENDER-WHEEL ARCH DISTANCE CALCULATION

AIM - Check out the wheel arch area or distance between the extreme point of the fender and wheel surface to follow European standards.

INTRODUCTION -

The wheel arch area is measured between the fender and wheel housing space. The stylish team needs to provide space in the wheel arch area to serve the standard rule as well as provide sufficient gap to rotate the wheel during turning without interaction with the fender outer edge. A baffle part is also provided between the fender and wheel space to protect the engine and pedestrians from an attack of stones, mud, and other material which roll along with tyres during the running of a car

To check the wheel arch area there are some standards are provided by different countries like JAPAN, EUROP, & US.

1. JAPAN STANDARDS-

  • measure the clearance (L) between tire and fender in three different positions within the area (K) and validate it regarding the STD chart.
  • The clearance provided by the stylish team must be greater than 5 mm in all three positions.
  • The value of "A" shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees backward from a central vertical axis of the wheel.

2. "THE US" REGULATION REQUIREMENT :

  • Check the all "L" clearance value on all positions from -100 degrees to 100 degrees and validate with std. chart.
  • The measured value should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulation.
  • The value of "A" is more than 5 mm at 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

3. EUROPEAN REGULATION REQUIREMENT :

  • In European std. "L" value should be greater than 10 mm at all positions of the section like SA, SB, SC, SD,& SE
  • Wheel guard requirement, the value of "A" should be greater than 5 mm from the central vertical axis of the wheel from 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees rearward.

PROCEDURE TO CREATE SECTION REGARDING EUROPEAN STD. :

  • Create the vertical and horizontal axis passing through a center point of the wheel and mark the vertical axis line as section "A"( SA)
  • Make a 30-degree forward angular line to the vertical (SA) line and 50 degrees rearward and notify as "SB" & "SC" respectively.
  • Mark a point at a distance of 150 mm from the horizontal axis on the fender's outer edge and draw the line passing through that point and named as "SE".
  • By using the BISECTING line method divide the arc from "SC to SE" and make an angular line through the center of the wheel and name it "SD".
  • Project the intersection points on the fender surface and measure the distance from the intersection point and projected points.
  • To pass the wheel arch clearance, the minimum distance should be provided as "10.0 mm".

# In the study and analyzing different region standards, the European standards apply to the following model :

model -

1. Creation of sketch as per European STD.-

2. Creating different sections at respective positions and clearance measurements:

3. measuring clearance value at section "SA": At section "SA" clearance value is obtained 9.95 mm which is less than Europeanthe std value i.e. 10 mm. So Section "A" is a fail.

4. SECTION "SB": At section "B" the resulting value meets the regulation so Section (SB) is a pass at this region.

5. Section "SC": The clearance value at "SC" is very less than per STD. and therefore section "SC" fail the test.

6. SECTION "SD": The "L" value at section D is 2.88 and which is less than 10.0 mm so it failed in this section.

7. SECTION "SE": The value of clearance "L" 5.99 mm failed to meet the European criteria.

RESULT :

SR.NO. SECTION STD. VALUE OBTAINED VALUE RESULT
1. SA 10 9.9490 FAIL
2. SB 10 10.0000 PASS
3. SC 10 0.1139 FAIL
4. SD 10 2.8875 FAIL
5. SE 10 5.9973 FAIL

CONCLUSION-

By following the European standard for fender-wheel arch design, the above model is tested, and the result seen that it failed at sections like SA, SC, SD, & SE.

To clear the failed region we have to modify the fender model at the respective section with the help of a STYLISH team.
