Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Aim : To analyze whether the given Design passes the European Standards
Regulations:
- European
- USA
- Japan

Below is the European Standards:

1) The clearance 'L' as shown in above fig at all the five sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE should be greater than 10 mm.
2) Wheel Guard Requirement: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30° forward and 50° rearward from centre vertical axis of the wheel.
Results Obtained:
1) A sketch is made initially to find the distance of SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE.

SA-SA distance - 25.992>10

SB-SB distance - 43.642>10

SC-SC distance - 38.36>10

SD-SD distance - 40.822

SE-SE distance - 43.786>10

2) Now we find the horizontal distance between the wheel and the wheel arch of the Fender
This is done by projecting the sketch on the wheel .

Distance between SA point andwheel arch outer curve = 9.949mm (Pass)

Distance between SB point andwheel arch outer curve = 10mm (Pass)

Distance between SC point andwheel arch outer curve = 0.114mm (Fail)

Table:

Conclusion:
The given design does not satisfies European standards i.e SC point which is less than 5mm (0.114 mm), which is way below the recommended 5 mm minimum distance. Therefore, this fender cannot pass the European standards. The design should be reverted back to the class A designer to modify the design and increase the gap.
