Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Wheel Arch
Wheel arch is also known as Wheel well. The wheel arch is the semi-circular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. Wheel arch is a part of the fender and Curvature in shape. While designing the Wheel arch it should be in mind that the wheel should be inside the fender.
As we see the car from the front of the wheel is outside the fender, then it causes a lot of damage to pedestrians and also to the car so the wheel should be under the fender.
Regulation of Wheel arch:
There are different regulatory requirements for the different country as follow. The regulation is fixed with respective the road of a specific
region (Country) by the government.
1. Japan regulation

Japan requirement
To measure the Clearance between tire, hub, & fender is L
The value of L should be more than 5mm if L<5 then Vehicle will not pass under Japanese regulation
As shown in the above diagram value of ‘SA’ At the centre & ‘SB’, ‘SC’ should be more than 5mm at line 30* forward and 50* reward
respectively from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
2. European Regulation

European requirements
To measure the Clearance between tire, hub, & fender is L
The value of L should be more than 10mm if L<10 then Vehicle will not pass under Japanese regulation
As shown in the above diagram value of ‘SA’ at the centre & ‘SB’, ‘SC’ should be more than 10mm at line 30* forward and 50* reward from
the central vertical axis of the wheel. Here we have made another 2 points to be measured that will be SD & SE is also more than 10mm
We have to Calculate the Wheel Arc area and prove whether the car will pass the standards or not under European Regulation
Given data:

First of all, we have to understand the European Regulation requirements.
- we define the wheel centre and create a perpendicular line and project a vertical line to the top view this Point will be ‘A’. Then to find point B
we make 30* angle to forward and 50* reward, at 150mm offset of horizontal line then mark SD and SE points.

- The value of clearance at ‘SA’ at the centre & ‘SB’, ‘SC’ should be more than 10mm at line 30* forward and 50* reward from the central
vertical axis of the wheel. Here we have made another 2 points to be measured that will be SD & SE is also more than 10mm
- SA

- SB

- SC

- SD

- SE

| Measurement of point | SA | SB | SC | SD | SE |
| Required length | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
| Actual length | 9.9490 | 10 | 0.1139 | -2.9070 | -5.9973 |
| Remark | FAIL | PASS | FAIL | FAIL | FAIL |
Conclusion:
AS per European regulation requirements the clearance at the giving point should be a minimum of 10mm, more than 10mm can be accepted
but at only one point there is 10mm clearance and at another point clearance value is less than 10mm so the car will not pass the
standards. the design of the fender needs to modify.
