Week 8 - Challenge 1 - Draft Analysis on a Fan Cover

AIM: To create the tooling axis for the given Fan cover model meeting the requirements of the draft angle and perform the Draft analysis on the model.

Draft analysis is a useful method to gather the drafting angle on multiple surfaces and to know whether the mould or the product created is feasible for manufacturing if yes then what is the angle in which the resulting product will be obtained out of the mould after cooling.

The tooling axis is an axis to define tool orientation, it is generally on the z-axis but can be altered for required tool creation.

The bisecting method is used to get an average number or distance between two lines and check whether it is feasible for the tooling axis to be created. It is the resulting line when the two-line along the surface of the design is extended and bisected.

Tools used :

  • Point
  • Bisecting line
  • Point to point line,
  • Intersect,
  • Boundary.

Procedure:

Tooling axis

  • Open the given CAT part file.
  • check for gaps between surfaces for that click on join and then preview
  • extract the boundary and disassemble the boundary
  • find the correct tooling axis where the material doesn’t interfere with the tooling axis and all the elements can be created
  • create an axis system using at the centre of the fan cover
  • Intersect the x plane and y planes concerning the class a surface.

  • Hide the class A surface and create a point to point lines on the suspected drafts where the draft can interfere with the tooling axis.
  • Create a bisecting line with the two lines and point to create a tooling axis of x plane
  • Follow the above step for the Y plane and assign these to different geometric sets.
  • Now create a bisecting line for the two bisections from planes X and Y in the direction of Z
  • The tooling axis is created for the component.
  • make it thicker and give it colour for identification and assign it to a geometric set.

Publication

  • The publication is done to the component to make it visible and navigate easily.
  • To publish the component go-to tools >publications and then select the tooling axis and the class A surface.
  • A separate tree structure is formed under the main part.

Draft analysis

  • Before going to drat analysis go to customized view parameter >under mesh >check material and then click ok
  • Now for draft analyses go to insert >analysis>feature draft analysis.
  • Use the compass to define the draft direction
  • In the colour, the scale changes the draft angle to 3degree.
  • The component changes to green in the indication of the passing draft angle.
  • Use a running point to check the angle on the component.

  • The draft analysis is complete.
