Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Introduction :- Car Fender

Car fender is that portion of a vehicle that frames its wheels inside them. The primary function of a fender is to prevent the sand or particles pickedup from the ground by the wheels from hitting pedestriants or other vehicles passing by.

Over the period of time, the fenders have taken different forms and shape to evolve into the shape as we know now. The main advantages of the new shape and form is to reduce the cost in scrap management so that the OEM's are able to produce more number of vehicle parts with lesser materials. This also helps in reducing overall metals used thereby reducing the overall weight and improving the perfomance and tank range of the vehicle.

Aim:

The main motive of this challenge is to decide wether the provided skin data passes the europian standard.

Theory

The europian standard requiers that the wheel should be within the fender by atleast 10mm at the 5 points . This value depends and change from region to region and is governed by the authorities at that regiion for example, in Japan, only a clearence of 5mm is requiered at 2 points. To prevent a vehicle from having different components of same parts, the OEM's decide to go with the region having the highest standard were the vehicle is indented to be sold.

The folowing diagram explains the europian standard of wheel arch.

Findings:

At Position A:                                                                                                                                         At Position B:

Clearence: 10 mm                                                                                                                                   Clearence: 10 mm

Pass/Fail:  Pass                                                                                                                                       Pass/Fail:  Fail

Offset Requiered in Zc direction: 0mm                                                                                                  Offset Requiered in Zc direction: 0.1 mm

At Position C:                                                                                              At Position D:                                                                                              At Position E:

Clearence: 0.1mm                                                                                      Clearence: 2.9 mm                                                                                      Clearence: 5.9 mm

Pass/Fail:  Fail                                                                                            Pass/Fail:  Fail                                                                                            Pass/Fail:  Fail

Offset Requiered in Zc direction: 10.1mm                                                Offset Requiered in Zc direction: 12.9 mm                                                Offset Requiered in Zc direction: 15.9 mm

RESULTS:

The provided skin data does not pass the europian regulations requiered of front fender. Only point A, of the 5 points passes with a clearence of 10mm. The rear curvature of the fender is hihlighted red, it should be offsetteda little more in the ZC direcion as shown in the black.
