Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
OBJECTIVE :
To calculate the wheel arch area of gthe given fender and prove whether car will pass the european standards or not.
INTRODUCTION :
The fender is important component of exterior of car s it houses the wheel arch which in turn houses the wheels of the car. the wheel should ideally sit within the fender to avoid the spraying of abrassive particle or sands or debries into the engine compartment or onto the pedestrians. so to avoid this danger the wheel must be always within the fender. so the engine compartment or car exterior is safe and also the pedesterians should be safe. so the horizontal clearance between the edge of fender wheel arch to the outermost edge of the wheel is well maintained according the apropriate standards. it should have sufficiant clearence between the wheel and fender so that it does not touch wheel arch area. wheel arch legth is L. which is to maintaned according to diffrent standards.

following are the some standards are followed by the automobile industries for wheel arch creteion.
1) japan standards :
- clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
- wheel guard rermt: the value of "a" shall be more than 5mm at aline 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

2) European standards :
- At the all five sections the clearance value should be greater than the 10mm.
- wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" shall be more than the 10mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from cental vertical axis of wheel.

3) US standards :
- All valuers should be greater than 5mm.
- wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" shall be more than the 5mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from cental vertical axis of wheel.

Wheel arch calculation:
This calculation should be done using european standards as per the given instyruction in the challenge to be followed.
European standards :
- At the all five sections the clearance value should be greater than the 10mm.
- wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" shall be more than the 10mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from cental vertical axis of wheel.
Procedure :
STEP 1 : first we have to create the datam plane on the outernost face of the wheel. then draw the sketch lines as per the european standards. then give text section points name using the annotations. As shown in below figure.

STEP 2 : After creating the sketch we have to create the intersection points on the lines created and the outermost face ofthe fender area. and then project these intersection points on the the fender wheel arch area.
STEP 3: Then the clearance value L at each points esction is measured and we have to check that all these values should be greater than 10 mm. as per european standards. as shown below

then sketch is drawn on the wheel face plane and projected on the wheel arch at section SA, SB, SC, SD, And SE. And then the clearance value at these points sections is measured. And all the diementions are maintained as per the european standaeds regulation.
Obtaining the clearance value "L " at section SA, SB, SC, SD and SE :
At section SA : the clearance value at Section A is less than 10mm that is 9.949mm. so its fails according to european standards.

At section SB : the clearance value at Section B is eaual 10mm so its pass according to european standards.

At section SC : The clearance value at Section c is less than 10mm that is -0.113 ( negative sign shown it is outermost fender wheel arch is inside the outermost wheel face. so its fails according to european standards.

At section SD : The clearance value at Section c is less than 10mm that is -2.844 ( negative sign shown it is outermost fender wheel arch is inside the outermost wheel face. so its fails according to european standards.

At section SE : The clearance value at Section c is less than 10mm that is -5.902 ( negative sign shown it is outermost fender wheel arch is inside the outermost wheel face. so its fails according to european standards.

side view : The negative sign is used beause the curvature of the fender wheel arch is going down from the wheel surface.

Observation Table :
| Sections | CLEARANCE MEASURTED (mm) | Test result |
| SA | 9.949 | fail |
| SB | 10 | pass |
| SC | -0.113 | fail |
| SD | -2.844 | fail |
| SE | -5.902 | fail |
Note : The negative sign is used beause the curvature of the fender wheel arch is going down from the wheel surface.
Conclusion :
The given model is analysed according to the european standards and from the above table. it is clear that the fender does not pass the european standards at all sections except at section SB.
Suggesion :
I suggest that the model should be sent it to styling team and they should modify the curvature of the fender in such a way there should have a minimum clearance of 10mm.
