Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challeng
AIM :-
Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
Introduction :-
Fender :-
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.
Wheel Arch :-
The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. It is an integrated part of a fender assembly. The wheel arch area have some standard specification to measure the clearance between the tire and fender. If the tire lies outside the fender, it does more chipping cause a damage to pedestrian and also to car. To have a pedestrian safety in mind, we need to position the tire inside the fender. For that we have certain standard regulations.
JAPAN REQUIREMENTS FOR FENDER WHEEL ARCH :-

- Measure clearance L of tire, hub, cap, and fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
- Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
- Wheel guard requirement: the value shall be more than 5mm at a line 30*forward and 50*rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
US REQUIREMENTS FOR FENDER WHEEL ARCH :-

- Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* and make the clearance check table.
- All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulation.
- The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5mm at line 30* forward and 50*rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
EUROPEAN REQUIREMENTS FOR FENDER WHEEL ARCH :-

Measure CL L at section SA-SA-SB-SB-SC-SC-SD-SD-SE-SE and produce a CL check chart to validate.
- In all five sections, the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy European regulations.
- Wheel guard requirement: the value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5mm at a line 30*forward and 50*rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
PROCEDURE:
- According to European standards, the design fender and wheel arc should pass the wheel guard requirement procedures
first, create a plane with the face of the wheel Arc.

Then sketch using lines along with given dimensions as SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE.

After sketching the project the intersection points onto the fender face. Then use the measure distance tool and calculate the clearance between sketch lines and wheel arc.

The clearance between SB line and wheel arc is 10mm also the line SB lies inside the fender so it is a positive value.

The clearance between the SA line and wheel arc is 9.9492mm also the line SA lies outside the fender so it is a negative value.

The clearance between the SC line and wheel arc is -0.332931mm also the line SC lies outside the fender so it is a negative value.

The clearance between the SD line and wheel arc is -2.9969mm also the line SD lies outside the fender so it is a negative value.

The clearance between the SE line and wheel arc is -6.3349mm also the line SE lies outside the fender so it is a negative value.

The Clearance between fender and wheel outer most arch from SB line is 43.6261mm.

The Clearance between fender and wheel outer most arch from SC line is 38.0440mm.
RESULT :-
The results are tabulated which is given below

CONCLUSION :-
From the above results we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European Regulations as the minimum clearance between the fender arch wheel to the outer most wheel is 10 mm and this design does not meet the this minimum clearance so this fender design is fail for the European Regulation standard.
