Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim :- To calculate section modulus of hood and optimize the design to have improved strenght of the hood.
Section Modulus :-
Section Modulus is a geometric property used to calculate the bending stresses in a structural member.
Mathematically,
It is defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia of a section about its centroidal axis and to the distance of the extreme layer from the neutral axis.
The formula of section modulus is given by,
S=I / Y
S = Section modulus (mm^3)
I = Moment of Inertia (mm^4)
Y = Distance between the neutral axis and extreme end of the object (mm)
Moment of Inertia-
The moment of inertia is the capacity of a cross section to resist bending. when it is subjected to an external load.
it is directly propotional to the strength of the material, which can be calculated through section modulus.
Section modulus calculation & optimization :-
Case 1 : Before Optimization

MOI (max) = 8.853638856*10^7 (mm^4)
MOI (min) = 3.848544400*10^5 (mm^4)
As per the section modulus equation,
S = I/Y
I = MOI (min) value is considered
Y = Total distance /2, Total distance =872.5423mm
Y = 872.5423/ 2
= 436.27115 mm
Therefore, S = 3.848544400*10^5 mm^4/436.27115 mm
S = 0.88214506*10^3 mm^3
Case 2 : After Optimization
After giving the 0.5 mm outward offset to inner panel and section inertia done same as case 1 for closed curve.

MOI (max) = 8.869370179*10^7 (mm^4)
MOI (min) = 3.888146650*10^5 (mm^4)
As per the section modulus equation,
S = I/Y
I = MOI (min) value is considered
Y = Total distance /2, Total distance =872.5423mm
Y = 872.5423/ 2
= 436.27115 mm
Therefore, S = 3.888146650*10^5 mm^4/436.27115 mm
S = 0.8912225*10^3 mm^3
Conclusion :-
As a result, as we increase the section area, the moment of inertia and section modulus will increase and the strength and load capacity of the body will also increase.
