Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Aim:

To decide whether the given design passes the European standards or not.

Given Desigh:

Fender Wheel Arch:

Wheel arch os the semi-circular part of the fender positioned abuve the wheel of the vehicle. The design of the wheel arch of the fender should be such that it must shield wheel and protect both passengers compartment and pedestrarains from the projection of water, mud and stone. The wheel arch area of the fender is usually designed as a cover or shield over the tyre along its perimeters to stop any debris or stones, dirt, sand, snow,ec., from getting thrown into the vehicle or the BIW area as well as outside the vehicle and onto the vehicles or pedestrains on the road. For the vehicles to has its permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fendrer must be complaint with the standards and regtulations set by respective countries.

The European regulations requires a pre-determined clearance or a minimum distance of 10mm to be maintained between the fender and respective tyre at particular points, along the tyre profile as shown below.

European regulations requirement:

  1. Take the outline of the wheel and the fender.
  2. Make the outline of the wheel and the fender.
  3. Draw horizontal and vertical perpendicular axes from the centre of the wheel circle.
  4. Draw the lines at 30 degree and 50 degree from the centre.
  5. Make a point on the fender line at 150mm from the horizontal.
  6. Then make a line that is exactly between the 50 degree line and line made on the 150m point.

Check whether the design passes thses conditions and conclude whether it can pass the European Regulatons Requirement.

Value of L at B section:

Value of L at C section

Value of L at D section:

Value of L at E section:

Value of a at section A

Value of a at section B

Value of a at section C

Value of a at section D

Value of a at section E

Table:

Distance Results
L at A 9.95mm Fail
L at B 10mm Pass
L at C 2.557mm Fail
L at D 2.88mm Fail
L at E 5.997mm Fail
a at A 25.938mm Pass
a at B 43.642mm Pass
a at C 30.102mm Pass
a at D 42.662mm Pass
a at E 47.625mm Pass

Conclusion:

The given design satisfies all European standards but one, i.e. the distance of L at section A, C, D and E point to the fender curve which lies at the valuse of 9.95mm, 2.57mm, 2.88mm and 5.99mm which is way below from the recommended 10mm minimum distance. Therefore, this fender cannot pass the European standards. The design should be reverted back to the Class A designer telling him to modify the design and increase the gap there.
