Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM : To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

Prepare a report explaining the different fender regulations

1. Japan Regulations :

• Measure clearance L of tire , hub, Cap & Fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
• Clearance must be greater than 5 mm in all the three positions.
• Wheel guard reqmt : The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30 deg forward and 50 deg rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

2. European Regulations :

• Measure CL L at sections SA-SA ; SB-SB ; SC-SC ; SD-SD ; SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.
• At all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations.
• Wheel guard regmt: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

3. US Regulations :

• Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* & make the clearance check table.
• All values should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulations.
• The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

ANALYSIS :

Obtaining the clearance L at the designated 5 points

The clearance distance 'L' is calculated at points SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE, which should be greater than or equal to 10mm

Clearance ' L' at SA :

Here L = 9.9490 mm

Clearance ' L' at SB :

Here L=10 mm

Clearance ' L' at SC :

Here L= -0.113949 mm

Clearance ' L' at SD :

Here L= -2.8875 mm

Clearance ' L' at SE :

Here L= -5.9973 mm

CONCLUSION :

From the above results we can conclude that the Fender does not Pass the European Regulations,

Since the minimum clearance ' L' between the Fender Wheel Arch and Wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and hence this design does not meet the requirement.

• Hence the styling team is required to modify the styling surface of the Fender such that the clearance "L" at sections SA, SB ,SC, SD and SE is equal to or greater than 10 mm

by increasing the curvature at those sections that lies towards outside.
