Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
AIM
To calculate the wheel arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard
WHEEL ARCH
The wheel arch is the semi-circular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle.
JAPANESE REGULATION
- The Japanese standards requires the distance between the wheel and fender to be minimum of 5mm all three points.
- The wheel guard requirement . the value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree backward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
UNITED STATES REGULATION
- The clearance between tyre and fender must be greater than 5mm. The projected points to be measured are at an angle 0° forward to 100° respectively. Thus each position is divided into 10°. Thus the projected distances are measured at around 21 different points.
EUROPEAN REGULATION
- The European Standards requires the distance between the wheel and fender to be minimum 10 mm at all 5 points.
- The wheel guard requirement . the value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree backward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
- Here, Wheel centre to 150mm above one point to be added at that point. We already taken 50 degree backward from the central vertical axis of wheel to at that specified point ro be taken mid point.
- So, European standard requires the distance between wheel and fender 10 mm at that 5 points.
SOLUTION
Point 1, L = 10 mm
Point 2 , L = 0.1139 mm
Point 4 , L= 2.8875mm
Point 5 , L = 5.9973

Point 1, A = 43.6263 mm
Point 2, A = 25.9920 mm
Point 3 , A = 38.3599 mm
Point 4 , A = 42.7600 mm
Point 5, A = 48.0012 mm

Thus, the wheel arch gap at required points and the car passes the European standard at one point only, The car does not passes the European standard.
