Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION
AIM
To Calculate section modulus and optimization of Hood design. Hood Assembly to be previously design. The section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases.
FORMULA
`S=I/Y`
Where,
S = Section modulus
,I= Moment of inertia
Y= Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
SECTION MODULUS
- It is a geometric property for a given cross section used in the design of flexural members.
- The section modulus is the ratio of total moment of resistance by the section to stress in extreme fibre.
- It gives an idea about how much load given structure can take
- The section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence its load bearing capacity.
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION

Moment of inertia (max) =, I = 1.5649×10^7 mm^4
Moment of inertia (min) =, I = 1.5020×10^5 mm^4
Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object, Y = 487.4152/2
Y= 243.7076 mm
Section modulus, S = I/Y
= 1.5020×10^5 / 243.7076
S=616.3123 mm^3
OPTIMIZATION
Inner panel depth 2mm increased

Moment of inertia (max) =, I = 1.5645×10^7 mm^4
Moment of inertia (min) =, I = 1.6939×10^5 mm^4
Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object, Y = 487.4152/2
Y= 243.7076 mm
Section modulus, S = I/Y
= 1.6939×10^5 / 243.7076
S=695.0542 mm^3
CONCLUSION
Thus, the Section modulus increases the moment of inertia increases and hence its load bearing capacity.
