Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER WHEEL ARCH CHALLANGE
WHEEL ARCH
- It is a semicircular profile above wheels designed for enclosing tire within the fender.
- The wheel arch is designed considering all possible motions the tire undergoes while the vehicle is in motion.
- The wheel arch also ensures stopping any debris that could possibly fly outside the wheel well and hit pedestrians.
JAPAN STANDARDS

- According to the japan standards the distance between the wheel and the fender should be the minimum 5mm distance.
- In the above image, the distance between the wheel and the arch should be 5mm all around the arch at some sections it fails.
European Standards For Wheel Arch

- The European regulation requires a determined clearance or a minimum distance of 10mm.
- To be maintained between the Fender and the respective tyre at particular point.

CLEARANCE VALUE:
The value of "L"at SB=10mm.

SA DISTANCE
The value of"L"at SA=9.9489mm

SC DISTANCE
The value of "L"at SC=-0.11394mm

SD DISTANCE
The value of "L"at SD=-3.3601mm

SE DISTANCE
The value of "L"at SE=-7.1675mm

| SECTION | CLEARANCE VALUE 'L' | RESULT (L≥10=PASS,L<10=FAIL) |
| SB | 10mm | PASS |
| SA | 9.9489mm | FAIL |
| SC | -0.11394mm | FAIL |
| SD | -3.3601mm | FAIL |
| SE | -7.1675mm | FAIL |
CONCLUSION:
we can say or conclude that the given fender dosen't pass the eurppean standards. The stayling team is required to modify the stayling surface of the fender such that the clearance "L"at sections must be greater or equal to 10mm by increasing the curvature at those sections towards outside.
