Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
A Report on Fender Design Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender Design regulations
Japanese standards for Wheel Arch Design

As per japanese standards the clearance between the fender wheel arc area and the wheel should be more than 5mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearword from the central vertical axis as shown in above figure. The L in the fig represents the clearance and is to be measured at points A,B and C.
European fender design regulations
As per European standards the clearance between the fender wheel arc area and the wheel should be more than 10 mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearword from the central vertical axis as shown in above figure. The L in the fig represents the clearance and is to be measured at points A,B , C,D and E.The point E is obtained by drawing a line at 150mm distance from horizontal wheel axis.
If a car is being designed for both Japanese and European markets , European standards will be considered .
Measurements of Clearance between wheel and Fender Wheel Arc Area using Catia as per European Standards
- First I extracted the outermost circle of wheel so that I can get a reference point,to draw the sketch for locating SA,SB,SC,SD and SE.

- And I created a projection plane for the sketch on the reference centre point
- I worked on the sketch to create the points SB,SA,SC,SD and SE

- After I was done with this sketch I took the extract of fender wheel arc area so that I can project all the located points mentioned in the above fig on the wheel Arch

Points projected on Wheel Arc Area

SB clearance

SB clearance=10mm
SA clearance

SA clearance=9.949mm
SC clearance

SC clearance=-0.114 mm
SD clearance

SD clearance=-2.899 mm
SE clearance

SE clearance=-5.976mm
Results:Following is the summary of clearance measurements done as per European measurements
| Sr.No | Description | clearance(in mm) | Pass/Fail status |
| 1 | SA clearance | 10mm | Pass =10mm |
| 2 | SB clearance | 9.94mm | Pass =10mm |
| 3 | SC clearance | -0.114mm | Fail < 10mm |
| 4 | SD clearance | - 2.899 mm | Fail < 10mm |
| 5 | SE clearance | - 5.976mm | Fail < 10mm |
Conclusion:Since only points SB and SB has the clearance =10 mm and the rest of the points are less than 10mm the fender doesn't clear the European Wheel Arch standards as 10 mm is the minimum clearance requirement at all the points.
