Fender Design Challenge
Title – Design of fender and its mounting by considering designing parameters using NX cad.
Objectives- 1. To understand importance of Fender
- To understand master section and design mounting according to master section (Drip Area)
- To get knowledge of manufacturing processes required for fender
Introduction-

Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.
Car Fenders: Front and Rear

The car fenders are located on either side of the front and rear wheels. Custom car fenders made from metal complement the overall look of your car.
The front car fenders begin where the front door hinges run and end just before the bumper. The rear car fenders begin where the back doors close and terminate before the back bumpers.
The car fenders whether front or rear covers the wheel and tire assembly of the car. A perfectly fitted car fender provides protection against excess mud and wet.
Types of Fender-
There are mainly two 2 types of Fender-
- Full bumper type
- Half bumper type
1 Full Bumper Type- 2 Half Bumper Type-

Front fender mounting points-
For mounting the fender on the car body we are using fasteners. The point on which fender is mounted must be flat so the fastener heads will rest properly and hold their position firmly.
Following are fender mounting points
- Bumper side mounting
- Sill side mounting
- A pillar side mounting
- Drip area mounting
- Body side mountings

Inputs given from styling team to design Fender-

- Drip area master section
- Styling surface of the fender
- Mounting locations
Design of Fender-
- Mounting for drip area

By considering all the requirements we have successfully made drip area mountings. Some of the NX cad commands are used are as-
- Law extension
- Trim sheet
- Emboss
- Bridge curve
1. Bumper mounting

Bumper mounting will be used foe mounting bumpers
2. Sill side mounting

Sill side mounting is made as shown in above fig with 2 mounting holes for fastening purpose
3. A-pillar mounting

A-pillar mounting is provided so that A- pillar easily get mounted over the fender. Here 2 holes are provided for the fastening purpose.
4. Baffle mountings

Baffle mountings are provided to attach baffles to the fender. We are having 3 baffle mounting areas in our fender so that baffle could be fixed firmly to the fender as shown.
Note- We have provided sufficient land for the fasteners for proper fitment

Conclusion-
We have successfully created all required mountings for the fender. All the mountings are as per the standards.
