Fender Design Challenge

AIM : To create CAD model of fender from given master section .

Fender :

• A fender is the part of the car that covers the wheel and extends up to the body of the car .
• The main purpose of the Fender is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tires.

Types of fender :

1. Full bumper type .
2. Half bumper type .

• Nowadays we are using half bumper type because of the following reasons :

1. For full bumper type the blank used for creating it is very large and also has lots of wastage while in half bumper type we have resduce the scrap .This is called scrap management .
2. In half bumper type we reduce the usage of the steel material and uses the lots of plastic on the bumper which in term decreases the car weight and increase the performance.

Mounting region on fender :

• A- pillarmounting .
• Body mounting.
• Sill mounting .
• Drip mounting .

Drip area :

• The area at which the fender gets attached to the engine housing through fasteners .
• It is the major mounting for the fender .
• Mounting at the drip area are designed leaving clearance of 200 mm from the back of the fender for cowl setup .
• Clearancve of 150 mm from the front of the fender for a headlamp housing unit .
• Darts are provided for spring back effects .

Given master section for drip area :

Sill mounting area :

• The area at which the bottom of the fender gets connected near the bottom edge of the door .
• The embossed sill mounting region is attached with fasteners .

A- pillar mounting area :

• A pillar mounting region is located near the cowl of the vehicle and fender is fastened with the bottom edge of the windshield.
• This mounting is covered with the side rear view mirror.

Bumper mounting area :

• The bumper mounting area is located beneath the bumper .
• After fixing the fender with fasteners the bumper will cover the bumper mounting .

Baffle mounting area :

• In this , the baffle gets insalled to the fender with the help of clips which holds the baffle with the fender along the wheel arch .
