Fender Design

Objective

  • To design the drip area of the fender using the master sketch provided
  • To design the Sill Mount, A-pillar mount, Baffle mount, and bumper mount.

Introduction

Fender

Fender is the part of an automobile body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. When a vehicle is moving forward, the top of the tire rotates upward and forward, and throws objects into the air and at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle. The purpose of fender is to prevent the injury to the pedestrians and prevent entry of debris into the engine compartment.Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface. The fender is joined using fasteners, retainer clips, and proper fitting is ensured.

Types of Fender

Full Bumper type

  • The full bumper type is not commonly used in modern day cars.
  • It requires a large blank for manufacturing and a lot of scrap is produced.
  • Only one fender can be made from a blank.

Half Bumper type

  • This is the most common type of fenders found in modern cars.
  • In this type of bumper only half portion is made of steel and other part made of plastic resulting in weight reduction.
  • By using a little larger blank size two fenders can be made which results in scrap and cost reduction.

Fender Mounting Points

  • The fender is mounted at five points (A-pillar, Body, sill, bumper, and drip area) which can differ from one OEM to the other.

Design Methodology

  • The Embosses are provided to improve strength locally.
  • The proper fillet radius and clearances were provided at each mounting points.
