Fender Design

AIM:

To create a fender utilizing input class A surface, a drip area using a specified master section as a reference, and a variety of mountings such as sill mount, bumper mount, and A-pillar mount.

INTRODUCTION:

What is a fender?

A fender is a component of a car, truck, motorbike, or other vehicle that frames or covers the wheel well. Its primary purpose is to keep dirt, pebbles, mud, liquids, sand, and other road debris from being flung into the air while the tires rotate. Sometimes we can build provisions for indicators and rear-view mirrors on the fender.

There are two types of Fender available.

  • Full Fender
  • Half Fender

Full Fender:

The conventional full-bumper kind of fender uses more material than other types. This kind is utilized in older car designs, where it raises the total weight and thus lowers performance. Due to the increased surface area, upkeep is also comparatively higher.

Half Fender:

The Half Bumper type is a contemporary design that uses less material. Therefore, productivity rises by lowering the blank size and delivering more performance. When compared to complete bumper types, the maintenance is also comparatively minimal.

Function of Fender:

  • The amount of dangerous exterior elements that your body and engine are exposed to is reduced by a car fender.
  • It protects both the driver and the passengers in the event of an accident or collision. They are designed to bend during frontal and side crashes.
  • Fender flares are connected to ensure that the body and engine come into contact with as few corrosive substances as possible.
  • It reduces wind resistance and makes your automobile more aerodynamic.

IMPORTANT AREAS WERE CONSIDERED IN DESIGNING THE FENDER:

  1. A Pillar Mounting
  2. Drip Mounting
  3. Bumper Mounting
  4. Baffle Mounting
  5. Sill Mounting

Design

The design of the fender is done in accordance with the given skin data and master section. The areas without master section are designed by me by following the required standards.

Master Sketch For Drip Mounting

Drip Area

Drip area gives connection to the fender with the engine compartment. The major consideration while designing the drip area is the gap between the front end of fender to the drip and the gap between rear end of fender to the drip. The gap at front should be 150 mm and the one at rear should be minimum 200 mm. These gaps are provided to accommodate headlamp unit and wiper motor units respectively.

An opening of 3 degrees after a gap is provided to prevent the visibility of fasteners through the gap between fender and hood outer while watching from outside. There should also be a minimum 10 mm clearance from the drip to the engine room. The average depth given to the drip is 40 mm. This value is the optimum value for the tools to work smoothly. If the depth exceeds considerably, it will become difficult for the tool to work. It will also cause spring back effect if exceeds beyond 60 mm.

For pedestrian safety, the gap between the side reference line from ground on the fender and the fender end towards the dip area should be lesser than 50 mm.

A Pillar mounting.

Even though the surface is curved, we must provide a flat surface for the mounting hole. A flat surface is created at the region of hole by giving a flat emboss.

Bumper mounting

This is the mounting which comes at the front side of the fender, and it provides connection between the fender and front bumper.

Baffle mounting

This is the mounting that comes in the wheel arch area of the fender to fix the baffle. It protects the pedestrians and the vehicle from chipping of particles and debris during motion. Baffles are fixed on the fender using locking clips which is usually made of plastic.

Sill area mounting

The sill area mounting is the connection of the fender to the bottom portion of the vehicle. Here also the approach is like the previous ones for providing mounting holes.

Final design

CONCLUSION:

Utilizing NX as a CAD program, the front fender is finally designed utilizing the specified skin data and the master section's drip mounting, A-pillar, bumper, Bumper mounting, Baffle mounting and Sill area Mounting.
